Maine Trailer Registration

I called both the maine "proxy" companies and maine DMV. The proxy companies will register it more then 2 years, but I have no idea how they can do it profitablily . maine dmv says you can use your current address and pay 2 years for direct registration and they mailed me a packet of forms and everything to register it myself. There is not one, but a stack to register more then 10 trailers  from maine dmv. I plan on doing it this year. got the forms last summer.

Personally, I'd much rather have a 5 year plate if I planned on keeping a trailer any length of time. In my case, I'll take $99 for 5 years over $75 per year anytime. As a bonus, MTR does all the work. I provide some information on the trailers and a credit card number. Then I get a license plate in the mail 8 or 10 days later.
I'd rather not mess with the forms and then have to renew in 2 years.
How or how much MTR profits isn't my business.

The registration form is a carbon copy.I doubt it would be a online thing.I just made a call to maine dmv and they mailed me the packet n no reason for you to do the same.the internet maine companies wants you to sign a proxy form and I don't want to do that.

I never put pen to paper and signed anything. The registrations have my name and a corporate address in Maine. Looking at the website, apparently there is a power of attorney form for certain cases but none of that applied to my trailers.
Every person has their own preference and has to do what's right for their own situation.
I noticed that there are a couple of different outfits. One has the same name as the company I used, but has an "s" at the end of it's name. It appears to be a totally different company from the one I did business with and linked to earlier in this thread.

The proxy is just if its never been titled, if its registered in another state its just a matter of the reg forms.

Not sure if that's exactly how it goes either. For my new dump trailer, I scanned the MCO and a bill of sale and emailed it to them. It had never been titled or registered in NY or Maine because it was brand new. It's now registered in Maine and I have a paper registration & tag, but no title. Because it was new I did have to pay sales tax in Maine, but that was at a lower rate than NY.
Probably the only time that title would be an issue would be if I were to sell the trailer. But it's easy enough to obtain a title here in NY with my MCO and bill of sale if I wanted to transfer ownership to someone else. Of course I'm sure that NY would hit me for sales tax again along with the title fees.

ill say again but here in SC we don't register trailers nor inspect them.

What happens when you leave SC? Some small pieces of equipment, like a log splitter or air compressor can get away without a plate but anything bigger and you'll get pulled over. I'm not sure you'd get a ticket but never the less having to stop and explain why you don't have a plate would be a hassle.

We have to have plates on any trailer except, for boat trailer as long as the boat trailer is hauling a boat unless, it's homemade. Then, you only have the sheriff's dept come by and sign off saying it is what you listed it as ie, dual axle, footage etc,. really not an inspection.WEalso don't have to have titles for trailers

Lights and plates on every trailer here in Indiana.

Most cops will let you slide during day light hours with log splitters or cement mixers if everything looks safe, they can see the trucks tail lights, and not being pulled by a pos.

Surprisingly, the Soviet Socialist Republic of New York doesn't make me tag me tow behind boom lift that weighs in at 3400#. I guess they treat it like an air compressor or a wood splitter. However, it does have taillights, brake lights & turn signals.

The law here in NY exempts "vehicles designed and primarily used for other purposes and only occasionally drawn by such a motor vehicle." from registration and as such they dont need to be registered as long as the following conditions are met:
http://www.dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv274.pdf said:
These vehicles can not be used to carry anything other than the devices mounted on them. If a vehicle is equipped with boxes or bins, and is used to carry tools and accessories, it is no longer exempt from registration.
Because these vehicles do not operate under their own power, they never require a registration, but the vehicle that tows them must be registered.
A boom lift fits the bill for a machine that is "designed and primarily used for other purposes and only occasionally drawn by such a motor vehicle" so as long as you dont have storage boxes on it, you are fine with not registering it.
We know a family which runs a cow hoof trimming operation out of PA. Under PA law, their trailer (which is a very short 2 axle trailer that looks similar to Albers Dairy Equipment - Hoof Trim Chutes but with hydraulic powered legs to pick the trailer up and allow it to be used when disconnected from the truck) does not need to be registered. Under NY law, they would probbaly be ok as well but they kept getting hassled when they came up to NY, so they ended up getting it plated. They said that it was cheaper than their lost time at traffic stops.

Of course they were hassled. It's not about safety. It's a money grab in this state. The police are supposed to act as revenue agents as well as enforce laws.

It angers me that people skip tolls like that. I drove through that Delaware toll on 95 hundreds of times, the traffic was awful.

Now I live in NY with tolls at $13 for a bridge...

It could be the toll cheaters screw up a good thing for trailer registration by drawing attention to it. I've haven't driven down that way much. I used to go out on Long Island, in the late 90's, that can be exiting for a rural person. The Cross Bronx was the worst stretch. I don't remember the toll on the GW, $7 maybe?, it was plenty as I recall.

I just went out and looked at one of my Maine plates. It says "Semi Permanent". If yours also says that, I think it means that it has to be renewed after a certain period, that it really isn't permanent. Usually a 5 year registration is the case. So it isn't for a "semi" trailer, per se.
Unless of course your plate says something different. Some states will say "apportioned" for semi trailers. Not sure how Maine does it.
