I have an older Italian made horizontal milling machine with a right angle head attached making it effectively a vertical mill. The vertical head takes an MT2 taper. I see that all collet sets that are MT2 have a 3/8-16 inch tapped hole in the end for a drawbar. I have been looking at carbide insert indexable shell mills. To keep as low profile as possible, I might prefer one directly with the like MT2 taper (as opposed to a 1/2 inch collet with a 1/2 inch shank arbor shell mill).

Now the question. Is it a reasonable assumption to make that such an MT2 shell mill will have to come with the 3/8-16 inch drawbar thread?

You do need to get a threaded arbor for the shell mill and you have to confirm with the vendor what thread it'll use as some will have metric threads or different imperial threads.

FYI- Most older mills don't have the rpm's to make use of carbide(especially inserts). If the shell mill has a large enough diameter that will help, but not likely with the taper of a non-keyed#2.

Thanks for the answers so far. What tool speed would I need? Then I can calculate diameter and rpm to see if it will work.

SFM(surface feet per minute) x 3.82(constant) / diameter(of cutter)
Therefore:
Say your cutter diameter was 2", your carbide specs at 350sfm,
3.82x350/2=668.5rpm
Worst thing you can do with carbide is run it to slow. A #2 taper is pretty small so I would take light cuts with a 2". Maybe look for a 3/4 -1" indexable insert cutter with the proper drawbar thread. Should be all over ebay. There are also #2 holders with set screw in most nominal fractional sizes that will allow for solid shank tooling(shanks with Weldon flats). Again, remember that formula for determining your rpm. This also applies to drill bits. Most run them to fast and burn them up.

MT2 just stands for morse taper #2 size most morse taper holders do not have a thread in the end. You might have to do some hunting to find one and I would go with a high speed cutter if you can find holder with threads in end might even consider a fly cutter. If you have a lathe you could even use a morse to staight adapter and tap the end yourself.

You could also cut part of the 1/2" shank off of a standard mill end holder so it can clamp right up against the collet.
