Once you get to this size tractor and this much money, you should get a tractor that will fit your needs now and in the future. You're right, very few people do trade them in, they just learn to live with the shortcomings.

The two main uses you state, food plots and mowing are where more gears are a great feature. Running ground engaging equipment and mowers with plenty of gears can be downright fun as opposed to too fast or aggravatingly slow. Also on the M series Deere and the LS P series you have electronic hi/lo which gives you an extra gear at the push of the button when things bog down.

You should also get at least a 540/750 PTO which is great for mowing with the bigger tractors. Mine has the 540/750/1000 and ground driven feature so I can run anything.

You can get'er done with any of those tractors, for sure. But if you get the 12 speed I guarantee you will be wishing for higher or lower speeds. Not enough to trade it in but you will say to yourself at least, "If I had it to do over again...."

Lack of gears is my number one of only a couple of dislikes that I have with my Mahindra 7520. 16x16 would probably do it for me though. I personally would not purchase another new utility tractor of this size without having at a minimum a 16x16 transmission. While the 12x12 works, there are times when the "right" gear just is not there. A lot of people that have not operated in those types of conditions simply do not understand, but it is a fact and why so many other options ARE out there. If there was no need, there wouldn't be any other options, but there is and there are.

All things that should be considered IMO. ;)

When I was looking at the NH T4.75, the ones in stock at the dealer had the 12x12 synchro shuttle with no creeper gear. I wanted the 20x20 hydraulic shuttle with creeper. The salesman tried his best to convince me that the the 12x12 was plenty and that anything more was a waste.

I'm sure 12x12 would be ok, but 16x16 or 20x20 would be better. Life is all about options.

Of course, I grew up driving old Minneapolis Moline tractors that only had 4 forward gears and 1 reverse, so I'm sure I could get by with whatever I had if I had to.

I often run my tractor to it's absolute fullest capacity, maybe not a good idea, but being a weekender it is what it is. If I had a 16x16:cool: or a 20x20  running it in these conditions would be much easier on the tractor and being able to split those gears would get work done faster for me. :cool2:

Would you run ag r1 or industrial r4 tires in this? I need ground clearance more than tougher tires I think. There are mudholes like that on the property and bigger ones. Which tires will give me the best chance on not getting stuck with a tractor of these sizes?

/ m7060 or 5085e #25
R1's would be the best. No doubt about it. They have much better traction.

/ m7060 or 5085e #26
With tractors of this size, the typical R1 tires give you 30% more traction than the R4s. R1s will be 6" taller, so 3" more ground clearance. If traction and clearance are high priorities, then R1s would be the way to go.

I know with our property after we got burned out back in 03, I didn't want to chance R1s and went with the R4s so that I would have a tough tire. Ended up with 10 ply tires and they still look like new 10 years later. Only been sort of stuck once and it was my own fault. Had to disconnect from the implement and just drove away.

If you don't want any flats, then R4s or non std R1s that have 8-10 plys would be the way to go.

So would you guys rather drive around this property with a 6000 lb 2wd Kubota mx4700 or a 10000 lb mfwd JD 5085e? The heavier weight does make me nervous about finding soft ground. I just wonder if the mfwd will greatly outweigh the extra weight.

If the MX4700 was 4wd, then I'd prefer it. But since it's 2wd, I'd take the 4wd 5085e.

But remember that you can get anything stuck, including a dozer. You'll have to feel your way around the land to test the limits. Go slow, and use your 4wd, diff lock and FEL to get out of small troubles. If you go charging headlong into the muck, you may be looking for a bigger tractor to pull you out.

That LS p7010c is very tempting. 37100 dollars for one with loader. 13k lower than the john Deere....the plant is 2 hours away from me. Wish I could find more about these things.

I will be putting a down payment on a 5085e next week. :)

goodness with all this discussion on transmissions I can't believe no one has pointed out that the 5085e is only a partial sync transmission. The website does not say which gears are synced, but typically its the top 2, so 1-4 you have to stop the tractor to shift. That's awfully old school for 2014. That typical selling price difference between a partial sync and 6x2 hyd shuttle in the M7060 are $3000 there alone. Its also an old school gear shift on the floor between your legs rather than a console mount short shifter. I agree it does not look bad on paper, but the tell tail things you see on Indian built tractors do remain.

Why present this in this way? You make it sound like ALL tractors built in India are this way and they ARE NOT. I have a tractor built in India 10 years ago (Mahindra 7520) and it has the shifter off to the side, all the main transmission gears are synchronized.

Why not just say that the e series JD tractors are an economy tractor and then mention the specifics of the transmission. Just because a tractor is built in India does not indicate that it is still using "old school technology";)

It HAS to be something with the special green paint Deere uses. A close friend of mine drove to my place, from another state, stayed over and drove my tractor for a couple of hours on two days. We hooked up the rotary cutter, disc, chisel plow, box blade etc and he went to town destroying my place.

I showed him all the benefits of the transmission, selectable PTO, Power shuttle and E/H hi-lo and I really thought he understood the benefits. Nope, it was a waste of my time and diesel fuel but we did eat well.

He went home and exactly two days later bought a Deere 5085E that his dealer had on his lot with the basic transmission. I made the point ESPECIALLY since he did a lot of haying to make sure whichever tractor he got to get the best transmission he could afford.

Talked to him Wednesday and the first thing he mentioned was the gearing was bad for haying, always too fast or too slow. The air conditioner isn't working and he broke some housing by the draft control (not exactly sure what he's talking about there) when he had a bale on the rear spear and backed into something. "I just bumped it, not hard at all!"

Other than that he loves the way it looks and it's a Deere you know. It has to be the green paint.......

It is unfortunate for the people that bleed whatever color that they are fixated on. There are so many other options out there today, and they just refuse to accept it. :(

The 5085E is made in the US, it's the smaller E's that are made in India.

On top of that, I am looking at an e series brochure and it sure looks to me that the shifter is off to the right and forward of the seat about 4".

So, I guess someone is not keeping up. I always love it when people compare to non updated models.

I think gears within a range are sync'd also.

I have 2014 5085E, they are built in the US in Georgia. I haven't been on here in awhile and didnt see this thread(busy using the tractor. Have about 100 hours on it now. Only problem so far was a blend door adjustment for the AC. It has really lived up to my expectations. Pulled a 14' offset disk all summer with it, did tons of brush clearing with 84" root grapple and mowed countless acres with mx-10. Also planted about 20 acres of oats the other day. You can shift on the fly with 4 gears in each range, you have to stop to change from range A to B from B to C you can shift but its a partial synchro, shift while coasting not under load. I just stop to change ranges. In C in 4 gear I get about 24mph.
