LTX 1040 forward/reverse issue

I have an LTX1040 bought in 2010. While mowing it will shift out of forward into neutral by itself. I cannot shift it back into forward unless I stop the tractor, turn off the engine, and get off and reach under and manipulate the arm that the gear shift lever operates. Then if I'm lucky I can hold it in forward until I can get back on and start it up and mow some more. Then it will happen again. Any help would be appreciated.

You're not having much luck getting some help, and I don't have any experience with your model. Is it possible that, somewhere between your shift knob and the transmission, there is a rod with an adjustable end?....your description tells me the tranny is not fully engaged in forward even tho the shift lever is....must be an adjustment feature somewhere in the linkage.....maybe someone with a LTX1040, or another model with similar tranny will chime in soon...Hill Billy Bob

OP - that's an auto CVT type tranny in that tractor, not a hydro... might check your owners manual for any details on same or you may be able to d/l service manual pdf files by first getting your tractors full model number and serial number off the ID plate/decal usually found in the cavity under the tilting seat - google "MTD manual archives", enter info and see if they have such to d/l... Cub Cadet themselves may have a service manual for it, but prolly not for free.
