Lost steering control on YM330D

I lost control of my steering. It was working ok until one day it suddenly I got several inches of play, then I could spin the steering wheel with no movement in the pitman arm.
I suppose I will have to remove and replace the upper shaft but it looks like a significant and expensive project. Any thoughts as to what else it could be?

could be a sheer pin on one of the shafts. check to see if the shaft running through the pitman arm is moving. is there any vertical play in the sterring wheel. Only a teardown will settle the question of what is wrong.

Normmm,
No sheer pins, based on the parts manual. The shaft connecting to the pitman arm is not turning.

Very common problem. Either the bearings or the ball nut (shaft).
