Looking for a little help

The dipstick on my 284 is 11 3/8" from the rubber stop. The fill mark is 1/4" from the bottom of the stick and full mark is exactly 1" from the bottom of the stick. This would reference from where the dipstick is fully inserted to the rubber stop.

I guess that answers the question. Looks like I've got about three inches of dipstick down in there somewhere!

I really appreciate the info. I'll have to get a new dipstick on order right away. In the meantime, knowing what I've got in there and what's supposed to be in there, I can fashion a coat hanger for interim use, to at least keep an eye on the oil level.

Wayne thanks for getting that measurement for him: I wasn't out there untill tonight and with my memory I forgot about it.

I would see if you could fish out that hunk with one of the small magnetic pick up tools, they have soem which teliscopes out several feet and can pick up quite a good load. Just be carefull not to pull it too hard and pull the end off leaving the teliscoping tool's end down there too! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I know that would be MY luck hahah.

In this case, I think it might be simpler to drain the oil and drop the bottom cover off the crankcase. Makes for a good opportunity to wipe the Asian crud off the inside while you're at it.
