I have a Long 5140 front end loader on my Long 360DTC tractor. The controls for the bucket are now no longer responding correctly (i.e., pushing left should tilt the bucket up but now drops the arms) and clearly need adjustment/repair. I have ordered the operator and parts manuals off eBay to have, but it won't be here for a week or so. I'm wondering if these controls are generally pretty similar across multiple compact tractors such that a video for a JD or something will at least let me get my project finished this weekend. What's making things difficult is Case makes a 5140 that also has a loader, but it is a much larger tractor and isn't applicable to mine.

What are you hoping for here? Do you have a hydraulic problem with the tractor or a mechanical problem with a loader control valve? If it's a valve problem searching for parts is probably a waste of time. You would be better off replacing it with a generic loader valve and be done with it. They are available from dozens of sources and not all that expensive.

Does the curl function work once the loader is lowered fully? If yes sounds like you may have a load check that is stuck open or failed on the lift lower circuit.

No, it's not a hydraulic problem to the best of my knowledge. It's a linkage adjustment issue. I'm just not sure how to adjust it.

Nope. It consistently doesn't work correctly regardless of height.

Did you reinstall the loader when this happened or change something on the joystick control linkage?

Reason for asking is that is sounds like the hoses are connected incorrectly or linkage on joystick is connected incorrectly.

I have actually never had the loader off, and didn't change anything on the linkage.

Why don't you post some photos of you valve and linkage? Maybe some ideas will come up.

Good idea. I've attached some pics here. As you can see, the setup is a little odd as the controls are all inside of this metal bracket, so it's tough to get good pics. I also took a video, but even zipped up I can't get it to post unfortunately. It shows how much "slop" there is in the joystick.

If you have "slop" in the joystick there's a good chance the valve spool that supplies the tilt function may not be actually moving far enough in either direction to accomplish anything. The view from the bottom shows the area to be pretty nasty, and only you can see what's actually happening in there when you move the lever. Maybe if you took an air hose to it, cleaned it off a little, and then looked to see what's moving and what's not, the problem might be self explanatory. Could nothing more than loose or sloppy bolts and/or ball joints.

With the engine off and loader on the ground move the joystick and watch which spool moves and how much it moves. Could be as simple as some linkage came loose.

I see Harry provided similar response while I was typing
