Well a design problem coupled with a bad decision on a 4' dia crotch ended in this.

It's hard to tell exactally what I am looking at.

Is the wedge welded to an I-beam, or box tube.

If box-tube, how thick was/is it.

If you could, could you take some more pics standing farther away. I am just having a hard time picturing it.

Problem was, I welded the wedge to the 8" x 1/2" plate instead of welding it directly to the top of the beam. The 1/2" plate flexed and tore open like a old fashion beer tab.

Like Bob said, the support shoud go back further behind the blade so all the strain is not on the front of the weld.
On the positive side the welds are fine, no sachasm(sp) intended....Mike

Put the same wedge profile in the web area of the girder to prevent the top flange from moving and to spread the load.

Tear out in the heat affected zone of the weld.

If you can extend the blade below the base surface and weld a big gusset between that blade extension and the base you can probably add enough strength to prevent that happening again.
