But Jim, not everyone has a press. A marlin spike is a lot cheaper. ;)

The biggest problem with cable around here is lack of anyone who carries proper clamps. The junk we can get at hardware stores isn't safe for a swingset, much less a tree limb, and don't even think about a trunk.

The guy who moved my 20' cargo container (almost into the swamp  ) had 3 clamps slip off before he ever got the thing loaded.

I haven't tried it (yet), but I've been kinda itching to make a crimper head for the log splitter. Most of my trees are small enough I could get by with a 5' choker. I can get reasonably thick drops of AR400, so I'd just need to mill the profiles and they'd be ready for use.

There's a guy around here that makes good money at ski areas splicing the ends of the cables for the ski lifts together. When I was doing NDT inspecting chair grips I watched him. He had about 30 feet of staging set up high enough to the cable could rest on top of it at normal height. He would just go back and forth weaving each strand. I didn't watch closely but it looked like he would just but opposing stands together with the joints staggered over the 30' section.

My father taught me how to do it with nylon rope with and without the metal insert. Being big into sailing that was one of the skills he taught himself at a young age. I've done the method Shield Arc posted but I used a swaging sleeve like in the second post/ video. I only have a 20 ton press so the swage is really just for keeping the ends of the wire from poking out. I just take a thick piece of steel drill a hole through it slightly smaller than the swage (usually do a couple of different size holes if I'm not sure) and then cut the metal in half to make a set of dies to crimp it. If the wire is small enough, like when I had to make my own custom length cables for the garage door, then I'll trust the press to have enough force to crimp it but for something like 1/2" cable I'd rather do too much and know it's not coming apart.
