I've been wanting to build something like this for a while, and too cheap to buy a "store bought" winch, so I've been fooling around with this on & off since March. I took pics all along if anyone is interested.

Yes, fingers crossed.:laughing: It's on a cyl. that I'm hoping will be the weak link, but the hitch is rated for some crazy (over 7000#) weight.

I could get in a LOT of trouble with a tool like that.

Swing a set of log tongs on the cable end, and there would be real worries ....;-)

Wow! Gorgeous piece of equipment. Makes mine look awfully puny. Pics are of it mounted on the back of my Jeep. Have not gotten it to the tractor yet. Mine will be used to haul out logs I cut from a downward slope I do not want to drive the tractor down.

Hey Rusty that is a professional looking piece of heavy duty equipment. What a great job.
I bet you will like that arch. How did you setup the drum, clutch, and drive.

Edit: On closer look it looks like a hydraulic winch. Do you have enough hydraulic flow to get decent line speed? I was going to put one on my dozer which has 13.5 gal/min until I found how slow it would be even at full throttle. I still might. Slow is far better than nothing.

The way you have those logs cantilevered out there will make blocking up real easy.

Thanks Gordon, you have a little input on that thing also. I remember a thread of yours where you made something to hold your peavy. Well I thought that was a great ides and made provisions for that also. The winch is a Ramsey hyd. and has a (top line layer) speed of 55/ft/min. that's at about 17gpm. The tractor has enough flow but I think there is a restriction with the size at the scv's. I'm still waiting for my sliders and other winch line hardware to come, so the only winch use is winding the rope on the drum. It's only a 8000# winch (on the first layer) but all my trees are on the smaller side from previous owner logging it hard. A friend has a Farmi type log trailer with a boom & grapple, one day I'll be heading up there with some cardboard and measuring stuff to copy the grapple. That's what I really want hanging there. Another "too cheap to buy" item I want to try to make is one of those self releasing snatch blocks.:laughing:

You make the snatch block, and I'd be happy to test it out for you! Nice job on the build. It looks really stout! I also like what you did with the cab roof ( or I assume you did that ).

Mike that "roof" is a engine hood from an old Cat D-6 that was in a buddy's field. I split in half longways and added 30" down the middle. I think I did a thread on it here. I'll see if I can find it.

8000# hydraulic winch is pretty powerful. We use 9000 on our flatbed with a side pulling unit and with the correct rigging and anchoring we can pull stuck straight trucks, and even the occasional semi out of ditches. Add a snatch block inline and you've just doubled your pulling power, although line speed will drop by 1/2..

You asked for it! I had a basic idea of what I wanted, a log grapple hanging out behind the tractor, able to lower to the ground, grab a log or to, then pick it up high to get as much of it off the ground (out of the dirt) to skid it out. Then started thinking that some of the smaller dia. logs might be able to be lifted completely up if there was a "heel" similar to a big log loader. Grapple's are pricey so that part might have to wait so I wanted as much lift as possible using only choker chains to grab the logs, hence the multi position top link design. The whole thing evolved during the build. Having never used a trad. log winch, I was relying (guessing) on what I think it might work.
This finally started when I was at the steel supplier picking up some stuff of another project and was looking at their "drops". They had the 2 pc. 6X6X1/4 tubing, with the angle's already on both pieces that makes the "backbone" of this thing, I immediately saw my log boom!

This is the blade, er skidding "brake". I hinged it so that it could act as a live heel for carrying logs off the ground. Also, between the 3 pt. pitch lift height and the blade swing, it looks like if I back up to the logs with the blade down, chain them into the slots, and lift everything up and swing thee blade that the butt end should be about 40" in the air and the logs in a better position - closer to the tractor. Plus who doesn't like adding moving parts & cylinders!:laughing:
