Log Splitter - I beam or box beam

Tubes are excellent for torsional (twist) and axial (column) loading, while W shapes are far less efficient.

On the other hand, W shapes are excellent for major axis (beam) bending, while tubes are far less efficient.

Optimum woult be a rectangular tube with the long side vertical, or a heavy wide flange beam with some side plates on it.

Just some food for thought.

Yooper Dave-

Any thoughts on suggested dimensions?

L3650-

Sorry for the delay. I guess I should pay closer attention to all the posts - so many to choose from at any given time.

Items to keep in mind:

Tubes are usually the most expensive pound for pound.

Can you get a welder at a reasonable cost to weld some side plates to a wide flange beam?

What is your budget?

What can you get readily from your steel fab shop?

How long of a beam are you looking for?

You will need something stout if you want longetivity.

Good Luck

Yooper Dave -

I've got some very reasonable prices on material from S&I Metals. I've also been talking to a neighbor who does some work for local farmers.

I had a line on a 5-1/2 inch ram, but that fell through. So now I'm waiting to size based on what I end up with for a ram. Fleet Farm used to offer 5 inch rams, but not right now.

You're in Green Bay, so am I. Small world.
