log splitter hoses

Got a new Speeco splitter from TSC. Was wondering if I could use 1/4 or 3/8 hoses instead of 1/2. When I installed the rear remotes on my tractor I noticed that there was a restrictor (about 1/4) right before the qc's. Would this affect the performance too much? The loader uses all 1/4 lines and seems fine.

We need to know the GPM rating of your pump for a 100% correct answer, but most likely the 3/8" would be OK.

Not sure why you would have a restrictor on your remote-but it could definitely slow the splitter down.

The restricter was on the fitting between the hose and the qc. I assumed it was there for a reason so I didn't worry about it

You are powering this from a remote, and will bungee the handle down?

You are right on the edge at 7.8 GPM, according to THIS chart, 3/8" hose is good for up to 7 GPM.

What size hoses feed the remote?

I think you should take that restrictor out, to get maximum flow to your splitter.

No bungee required. Handle stays by itself. The hoses look no larger that 3/8.

I checked them yesterday, The feed hoses are 1/4" I ended up just using 1/2" for the splitter, that way if I ever upgrade tractor, I don't have to change hoses.

The main problem with using the smaller hoses is the heat they will generate. Heat kills hydraulic oils. You did good by going with the next size bigger.

Ultimately, the restriction will be the QD fittings, so, I'd use what hoses came on it. My splitter came w/1/2" lines...so I bought 1/2 to 1/4 adapters for my QDs. Thought about using the "correct" size hoses, but still would have needed adapters at the valve...more hassle and money for no gain...went with the KISS approach.
