Log splitter as a press

My thought too. Although, out here, we get three cans/bins from the waste company. Black lid is trash, Yellow lid is recycle, and Green lid is yard waste.

In our case, we seriously cut down on the trash; most is recycle. We don't use to the green recycle much, since we mulch or compost most stuff. And, most bottles and cans, glass/aluminum/plastic-soda, have a 5 cent deposit/refund.

Tim,

While you've got the welder out, why don't you weld up some recycling containers...

Thanks for posting this J.J.
I bought a 3 pt hitch log splitter for my 4200 JD. this season and really love it. While splitting some fire wood I got to thinking, "I do that sometimes", how bout making a cider press to work off this thing. I have many apple trees and I really like cider so I just might build something this year. A log splitter has to have more than just one use, as you have shown us here. Any other ideas out there?
Clayton
That's a great idea. I love cider (1st pic) and have a lot of the right kind of apples. My splitter is a vertical splitter, shouldn't be too difficult to adapt. Would be extremely interested if someone developped the idea.

Yep. My splitter is on the 3pt hitch of my 4200 JD. It will swivel horizontal or vertical. I'm thinking the vertical will work best for a cider press. I may have to park the tractor on something higher so the cider can run out the bottom of the press into the jugs. I used to have a hand crank type press, so I have an idea how to go about this project. When I come up with an idea, I will post in in here.
Well I better get out there this weekend and prune my apple trees. They have been neglected over the past 100 years.

It's the way the end of the rod and wedge is fixed to the beam that prevents the rod from bending under stress, that also limits what you can do. The center of the push is only a few inches off the beam, for pressing apples, grapes etc you would have to have an offset adapter to bring the "push" out away from the beam, and extended away from the end of the rod so you could get it in a barrel of some sort.

It should be doable, the offset plunger would not need to be able to withstand the full force of the cylinder as I don't think you would need 20-30 tons of force to press fruit ?

This is the idea that I have. Mount the bending roller assembly on the frame and use the splitter cyl to bend tubing, flat stock, bar, etc

How about just pressing them in a piece of 5" pipe with holes in it? You could have a plug on the bottom that the pipe sits on, and just take it off to clear out the pulp.. maybe a fixture on the lower section with a drain pan?

I finally got around to building the tire bead breaker today. Now all I need is a tire that needs to be broken down to try it on..;)

Chilly807,

Nice work.

Is the bead popper adj for all type tires, like large fat ATV tires, and smaller lawn tires?

A customer of mine who I deliver steel to is pretty ingenious. He has a pair of electric wood splitters in his fab shop that he uses as metal brakes. The guy a hoot to talk with and a whiz with metal.

Well, I built it to fit 14-16 inch car tires, so it should handle anything close to that size. The radius is exactly right for 15 inch rims, trial and error will show how good it is for other sizes. There's 6 inches of clearance between the popper and the bed of the splitter.
