They say that in a polluted city, the exhaust coming out of a Tier 4 Final is cleaner than the air going in.

Seems reasonable that if city is polluted by unburned hydrocarbons, the next engine sucking them in could burn them.
And the catalytic converter could clean them up further.

But it's not a good reason to take a deep breath.

You know that control on the dash where you choose "outside air" or "recirculate inside air" ?
Soon theyre gonna plumb the tailpipe into the car.:D

Harley is showing off next generation new electric motorcycle and it got me wondering if Loud Batteries save lives?

It's going to be tough being a BA with something that sounds like the Jetsons space car!

Maybe the playing cards in the spokes. Like we did when we were kids. Unfortunately, a horn as loud as straight turn-out pipes on an electric Harley will bring it to a rapid stop - ha, ha.

About a year or so ago, I got to ride a prototype electric dirt bike that was made by / for a ...BIG ...manufacturer...I honestly believe that electric dirt bikes will be a huge hit. The power is instant and tourgue is off the charts. ..just need to get a bit lighter.

Re: Local crackdown on "rolling coal"

Are people using that spacing while going 60MPH? I can see that spacing at under 45MPH, but not so much as 60MPH or higher.

Aaron Z

Yep - Its either battle speed (70mph +) or stop and go. and in either case, that much room leaves you open to be cut off.

At 60 mph on the highway.... it's more like 12-15' spacing ...if you leave 25' open....you will inevitably be slamming on the breaks as someone dives infront of you to fill that opening. ....true story...

I can add my own experience of loud pipes from last evening when driving home. Just before dusk, a bike came up behind me on a small state route. I was going the posted limit, or slightly over 55, and had my headlights on but most others didn't. Double yellow line, approaching an intersection. The biker slips out from behind me into the oncoming traffic lane and gets up next to me and then guns it. LOUD. He flies past me just as he crosses the intersection. I did see him come up behind me, and could hear the slight rumble of the bike when he floated into the other lane, and I could definitely hear him when he tried to impress me with his loud bike while next to me. But unfortunately for all bikers, it's guys like him who have ruined it for the rest of you.

I prefer factory exhaust on my 'Milwaukee Mopeds'.

IMG_0993.JPG

Y'know, I was really concerned that vehicles in front of me wouldn't hear my OEM mufflers.

I even got an estimate to have my pipes modified to point forward. Hah!

Like shotguns, diesel air horns, and megaphones are, I'd completely forgotten how their sounds aren't directional either, so no need to.

IMO, loud pipes are a way of saying, "If my Dad was here, I'd beat his a__ too, so get TF outa my way!" :D

The clickity clack of that springer front end is probably louder than my pipes..

My wife bought me a brand new Harley for my 55th birthday in 1998. FXDL - Harley Low Rider. I modified the exhausts. Put on turn out straight pipes. The nice thing - I could go quiet if I wanted. They DID NOT have to be loud all the time. However - if I wanted, in second gear I could dam near blow the windows out of the stores along Main Street in downtown Cheney. The Cheney Weenies didn't like the loud pipes either. They told me that - several times.

I gave the Harley to my son three years ago. I ride a 2018 BMW R1200GSA now. Quiet as a mouse urinating on a cotton ball.

Meanwhile I’ve been sitting in this motel room, listening to some guy’s Cummings rattling away 10 feet from my window. Is it really necessary to let it run for an hour? I seriously considered going out and shutting it off but don’t really need the bloody nose which would probably ensue.

Never heard a Cummins rattle. Cat maybe, Cummins, never. Interestingly, all of my Kubota's rattle. Must be the injection pump or combustion chamber shape or location if the injector.

I find that sound....comforting.

Not everybody shares your opinion... especially when it’s directly outside your window. After two hours I headed out to the motel office to complain and noticed two guys sitting in it. After several requests for them to shut it off, I turned into that bugeyed screaming, drooling idiot which everybody hates.
It worked. This AM when my coworker left the room, our neighbor thanked him for speaking up.

"One gallon, .. two gallons, ..."

And I'm happy just to watch a guy smoke-off a few thousand miles worth of tire tread in a single cloud of Macho-ness.

"One thousand, .. two thousand, ..."

Where else does 75 feet of 'Look at Me!' equate to several thou$and miles of ROI squandered? ;)

Thanks, anyway, I'll stick to burning smokeless powder.
