I don't buy it either.
Been riding motorcycle for decades. The "load pipes saves lives" is total crap !!

It's a topic that can not be proven true or false either way. There is simply no way to know who "would have been heard" with loud exhaust..and was not, and got hit..and no way of knowing how many times a bike was heard and made someone look a second time and saw the bike. Someone said exhaust is ditectional..that is crap and that person has no idea what they are talking about. I know for certain that my bikes can be heard a minimum of 25' behind a car on the highway..probably further back on side roads. This most certainly should create a situation where a driver would look to see where the noise is coming from. Same concept as a siren on a cruiser or ambulance.

How did he get caught?

By being stupid. He was pulling an oil field pipe trailer. Got pulled into a DOT inspection station. That's not what got him caught though.

He had one of those ridiculously big semi stacks coming up right behind the cab. If he would have left the exhaust looking stock, the DOT officer probably would have just given it a cursory glance.

But with the truck being brand new and a modified exhaust, loud as the Dickens and pouring black smoke from the tune...... well, you get the idea.

There's about a dozen diesels I see near me that are set up like this and roll coal pretty regularly. A guy I work with had his wife take some pictures of the truck when it happened in front of them. They sent them off to the sherrif and got no reply.
The police seem to ignore them, yet the day the muffler let go on my car I got a fix it ticket coming back from work. I don't get it, I must be doing something wrong.

You have to act a little different if your hauling commercial than if you're the local turd kicker. You're right. Being stupid. You would think it would cross his mind. Haha. This dude did the same thing. Then mounted the semi stack. Looked pretty foolish to me.

DOT will check farmers and Johnny home owner if they see something sketchy or suspect around here. And they love landscapers.

First off I don't own a diesel pick-up but about 30 years ago I was driving a line truck at work with a Detroit diesel engine and whenever you would mash the accelerator it would blow out an awful cloud of black smoke, well one morning I was going out to a job site and was stopped at a red light when a woman on a bicycle wearing a vest that said " One Less Car" pulled right up beside me and screamed at the top of her lungs there's one of them Sons of Bitc--'s , so naturally I looked around hunting for him, then she screamed out that it was me and that I was killing the environment and a whole bunch of other things, well it just so happened that the exhaust pipe was stuck out on her side so I just creeped up a little bit so it was even with her and the light turned green I held my foot on the brake and mashed the accelerator to the floor and smoked her *** out, felt pretty good about it at the time, never realized that it would become a fad, never had reason since to do it to anyone else.

If you are 25' behind a vehicle going 60MPH, you are an accident waiting to happen.
A 2 second following distance at 60MPH is 176 feet, your "bikes can be heard a minimum of 25' behind a car on the highway" puts you well past that, past "he's getting a little close, is he going to open the door and climb in?" and well into "there is no way you can stop before rear ending that car" territory.

You're a sob. Like you had a choice if you could drive that truck. I guess you could ride a bike just wearing your harness and hooks. Maybe carry some fuses in the front basket. And put the extension pole over your shoulder.

Ever wonder how close a emergency vehicle going the same direction has to get before hearing the siren when travelling at 70 mph with the radio on and the AC cranked. That distance is a lot closer than you would imagine.
