Lincoln 1142 grease gun won't prime

Jinxed myself! It happene to me this morning. My long hosed Lincoln gun ran out of grease on about the second zerk. I get another new cartridge of John Deere's "best multipurpose" and place it in the barrel, put the top end on and all of that. Bled the push button air bleeder, no air. Pumped it to only get a "spit" or two of grease and then NADA, zilch, zero. Pump and bleed and a tiny burp everytime. I finally give up and take the gun apart again to find,... I had forgotted to remove the pop top! Worked a lot better with the cartridge opened...... DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHH LOL

Good news and bad news... Good news is that whacking the grease gun against the tractor tire primes the pump very well. Bad news is that whacking the gun against the rear tire ripped off the straight threaded pipe. Luckily I still had the alternative flexible hose fitting as a replacement.

Haven't had to try the stuffing grease method yet but will make that part of my cartridge change routine in the future.

You could just buy a cordless and hold the trigger down and let it go wild until it primes itself, lol.

I had the same problem recently and found the replacement grease cartridges were smaller and not allowing the rubber disk on the rear to apply pressure on the grease in the cartridge to push it forward.

My dad gave this when I was 3 years old (1943) and I knew right then what my job was going to be until I moved out. Never had to prime it, so have no ideal all the trouble you guys are having with a grease gun.

All kidding a side I have had this gun for at least 30 years. Thought you would like to see one from the past.
