I have a JD 4210 that I purchase on 4/1/05 that developed an oil leak in the hydraulic cooler. It seems the battery leaked and caused the problem. The plate under the battery is very corroded and the cooler has corrosion all across the area where the battery sits. The hole is about the center of the cooler and just below the top of the battery. I contacted the dealer where I purchased the tractor and was told there is nothing they could do under warranty since it is 31 months old even though it has only 81.8 hours. I ordered a replacement and then started checking posts on TBN. It seems there are quite a few instances of this problem documented here. I read one that says there was a change in the type of battery from a manifold type to one with 6 screw down caps. My battery has the 6 caps and is part number LVA11725. They were tight and the fluid level is actually a little low, so I don't know how it leaked. There doesn't seem to be any damage to the battery case either.

Bring it to your local radiator shop and have it fixed and buy a battery case like they have for boats

Yes, JD had some battery issues as you found out! Even my 4110 was leaking-but luckily no permanent damage was caused. As you may have read most people fitted a sealed gel-cell type battery (Optima?) for a permanant fix.

JD has their share of faulty leaking batteries. I had mine fixed under warranty. Keep searching and you'll find many threads with this issue.

I've got the same battery problem with my 4410, however mine doesn't have the hydraulic cooler pictured. It only has the radiator screen with the radiator behind it. It is a 12/12 E-power reverser tractor. Do only eHydros have the cooler??

I have a 2004 4310H that I picked up new in May 2005 and now has 126 hrs on it. Around Sept 2007 I noticed a white crystallization on the floor under the front of the tractor. I pulled the front grill and my oil cooler was all corroded but no corrosion on battery. I contacted my local dealer in October and they said its out of warranty and the best they can do is I pay 1/3, the dealer pay 1/3 and Deere would pay 1/3. They said they have not heard of this being a problem on the xx10 series tractors. I called the mother Deere customer 800 number and they said the dealer has the final say and would not take it to the next level. So i am going to pay 1/3 the cost for the oil cooler and replace the battery on my own (with Optima or other gel type).
See attached pictures that were taken after I tried to clean up and spray with protective coating. I will not replace the oil cooler until I have the new battery installed.

It is not a very robust battery (despite the "Strongbox" name) and it apparently has a tendency to "boil" out the battery acid via the caps which then condenses on the cooler/radiator which causes the corrosion. I do not believe for one second that they haven't had any other issues if they've sold any number of these forty10 series because many seem to have the issue (and many probably haven't been noticed/reported). My JD parts guy was well aware of it.

At his suggestion, I bought the correct size battery (22nf, I think) from the local Interstate battery dealer and have had no further issues. Also, it was reasonably priced $50-60 and fresh. I had looked at the local Sears and found several more expensive batteries on the rack that where over 2 yrs old!

Don, from looking at your pictures, I would say that your battery is venting fumes on your cooler, creating the corrosion

Yes, I also believe that is what is causing it. The only thing
is mother Deere does not believe it. I did a little research today and found our local battery manufacturer (East Penn Manufacturing Co Inc (aka Deka batteries) make an AGM type in regular case configuration called the Deka Intimidator. I found one that may fit (part # 8AMU1R for $106.08). I need to do a little more research on this to make sure it will fit with no modifications. I will post my research in the next few weeks.

I believe the xxxU1R battery is a smaller, lawn tractor-sized battery. A 22NF will fit in the factory hold-down assembly on that machine w/o issue.

Yes, only eHydro equipped machines have the extra cooler in front of the radiator. The cooler is Deere part number AM122482, manufactured for Deere by Modine.
The corrosion in the pictures was absolutely caused by the battery based on my multiple experiences with the same problem. The problem only goes away when the stock battery is replaced by a sealed "gel" type battery. Deere provided me with a sealed Interstate battery on the tractor's second trip to the dealer for a corroded cooler and battery tray.
4000TEN owners still running the stock battery would be wise to swap to a sealed battery as soon as possible; the new hydro cooler retails for around $180.

IMHO, a gel-type battery is needless expense. A good maintenance free 22NF battery such as Interstate ($52) works well and is less than 1/2 the cost.

The battery Deere gave me is an Interstate DCS-500. It's rated 50AH (amp hours).

Deere didn't think so (in my case), they gave me one. The battery, in the 4000TEN series, is mounted in direct contact with the hydro cooler allowing for ample heat transfer. The result is a hot battery with acid that boils out, either in liquid or vapor form.

Good for you if the battery cost you $0, but I was buying mine. I bought my tractor used an the PO didn't notice or care about the issue while under warranty.

I don't have the oil cooler in front of the rad (12-12 ePRT trans), but my tractor still had the vapor/acid corrosion problem at the lower area of the radiator and at the tray assembly from the battery being out in front. This would indicate that it wasn't heat from an oil cooler that causes the battery boil out problem, but that it was the battery design/choice itself.

The battery mounted in direct contact with and in front of the hydraulic oil cooler seems like a bad design to me. It essentially defeats the intent of an air-to-oil heat exchanger by location. JD should have mounted this oil cooler somewhere else, such as up higher or oriented vertically at the side of the radiator. For that matter, the battery partially blocking the radiator doesn't help its effectiveness either.

I've had no further corrosion issues since switching from the JD battery to the maint. free and really don't think you need a gel cell. Just my $.02.
