Today I worked mostly on tree removal. I undermined this tree, put a little pressure on it with the come-along, then cut the roots with the ax.



The smaller ones seemed to take just as long. When I have more time I will see if there is a walking stick in there.

I could have saved some time packing and unpacking. The chainsaw was about all I used today. I cut a few slightly larger trees to allow room for the tractor around the edges. Then a few more smaller ones to improve my pond view. I did use one of the shovels to pile more dirt around my fire hole. No need to get it too fancy. It will be filled in soon. I'm going to put an outside kitchen toward the pond {and set up a site for tent camping}. I'll fix up a good fire hole there.

After I learned you don't have to fill the buckets full of dirt each time, my back got much better No kidding. After going to 3/4 full buckets, it was so light in comparison it was a breeze.

I did use the box blade a little this week. I got a lot done in a short time. But a FEL would still be a nice thing to have. With the box blade {or the scoop thing we have} you have to plan out where the dirt is going before you start moving it, or you will be boxed yourself into a corner.

Yea but my problem with that is I now have to make 25% more trips. I'd take the full buckets. I have also found one in each hand makes them lighter. They balance each other and aren't pulling you to one side.

I did a few trips like that. But since I'm not carrying them that far, having to put one down to dump the other seemed like more work to me. That and climbing out of the hole.

Larro, at what depth do you hit clay?

I saw the first clay at 4 or 4 1/2 feet.

Five foot is about as deep as I'm planning on going, so I was starting to think I wasn't going to hit clay at all. I turned up five or six hand sized hard clumps. The rest was just mixed in with the dirt.

I used the shovel and the saw this morning. After lunch I went back and scoped out a location for some tent camping. Dug a fire hole and boiled coffee. This site is closer to the pond. About 25 yards through the huckleberry bushes, this is the view.

Yesterday I got in a little shoveling along the west wall. A oak tree stump located near the edge of the hole was a job of work removing. I have one more small stump on the north wall, but it should be pretty easy.
