What is a good landscape rake for the money?

After I get my land disked I will need a rake to help get the roots in a pile. But when the land is complete, I probably wont use the rake unless another hurricane comes.

I need a 6' rake for my tractor. There is a Bush Hog dealer by my house and he has the model LLR 72 for $650 plus tax. I really don't think its worth that much money. Then a little farther down the road there is an LMC implement dealer that has a 6' rake for $525 plus tax. I could go to Tractor Supply and get the Countyline 6' rake for $469 plus tax also, but a guy down the street from my house sells a few implements and has a 6' "Homier" Chinese rake for $470 plus tax.

Any sugguestions?

About the only advice that I can give you is that you usually get what you pay for. There have been many here that have had problems bending the bar that the tines fasten to, myself included. If you want advice on which one to purchase, pictures of them would help a lot. Some designs tend to bend easier than others.

Here is some info and pics on a Fred Cain rake I purchased. I did a lot of research before I made a decision. The Fred Cain is one stout rake.

If it's only for a one time job go to TSC and buy their rake, if you bend it take it back and tell them it's a POS and they will give you a refund. Their rakes are fine as long as you don't hang it up on something solid, it will bend. With a little modification they are as good as any others.

I paid about $1400 for my heavy duty 8' Ford rake 21 years ago. What's that in 2009 dollars? None of these light duty under $1000 rakes compare at all with the real heavy duty $1500 to $2500 rakes. As they say you get what you pay for. Besides the frame, the teeth really matter. In a heavy duty the teeth are thick spring steel and vibrate at high speed causing the material to break up and spread. You don't get this from cheap rakes.
I've been using York rakes for over 40 years and I'd trade good teeth for guage wheels any time. I'll also agree that Landpride (in the higher series ranges) makes a good rake.

I got 4 yrs on my KingKutter 6' rake and yes it's got a coulple of small tweaks (bends) here and there, but mostly still straight. I got 4 KK implements and they've held up just fine. bjr

I have a Frontier (JD) rebadged Woods that was a lucky find barely used. New, it is in the pricerange that AndyMA is talking about. A couple of the tines are bent because our Colorado property's best crop was rocks. The frame, however, is like new. It is heavy duty thick steel with substantial welds.

The Land Pride looked similar. The farmstore import I looked at was much lighter duty.

Leinbach. I haven't abused mine much and this spring add about 160#'s to make it dig in better, but so far it's a nice rake. Built pretty solid I'd say. If it's truly going to be a one time thing I wouldn't spend much money, but if you've got anything to maintain, driveway etc, then spend a little more. I have 500' drive that I find the rake helps to bring the gravel back in from the sides, so the box blade can level everything.

ive really used and sometimes abused my leinbach 6' rake. Have moved dirt, spread rocks, pulled brush and generally just used it to the max, still as straight as the day i got it. Best $475 i ever spent.

Welp, I did it!
I went today and purchased a 6' Fred Cain landscape rake. I appreciate Everybody's opinions but want to especially thank GIJOE for introducing me to the Fred Cain brand. And yes, I bought it from the same place you did, Joe. The man liked to have talked me to death! Mr. Alvin is a firm, but friendly feller.
It is a Very well built piece of equipment. I looked at Woods, Bush Hog, Land Pride, and King Kutter, and a Chinese brand.
The Fred Cain was by Far the best made, for the money. I'm so glad I didn't make a mistake on a much more expensive brand.

Yes, Alvin is a very nice guy, and very knowledgeable. He's farmed his whole life and knows his way around tractors. The man definitely likes to talk. Whenever I need to go by his place, I usually set aside a whole day. There is no telling how long I will be there. I hope the rake doesn't disappoint you and proves to be a good one.

Same here, looking for a rake at a reasonable cost vs. heavy duty. I can't see spending $5-600 for a 5' rake that isn't going to be used all the time, but I also don't want to buy a POS.

Any suggestions for my area? I heard bad about the TSC stuff already.
