Hi,

My wife and I recently purchased a 5 acre home site soon to be expanded to 10, possible 13 acres. A portion of the land has to be cleared of small trees and underbrush and vines. In addition, we are remodeling the home and will be redoing the landscape around the house.

The area that will be cleared is about two acres worth and covered in tree debris and junk that for lack of a better description, needs to be raked up into a burn pile and burnt when the burn ban is lifted.

So...rock rake or landscape rake? I can find plenty of landscape rakes(3 of them) on craigslist. Only one rock rake available.

I will be needing to rake up sticks, root debris, and all matters junk on the property which set of tines will be more versatile? Rock or landscape rake?

Next, Land Pride or King Kutter? The Land Pride which I believe is a brand related to John Deere weighs in at 270lbs and the King Kutter at like 230lbs. I'm guessing the heavier unit would be better. Advice?

I have never tried a rock rake but own a 7' KK landscape rake. I cleared a 1/4 acre food plot in the middle of my woods and the landscape rake worked great at raking up all the debris. I'd get it in a pile then use my grapple to move it to where I wanted it. The landscape rake works great on other things as well such as gravel roads and driveways. For smoothing gravel or dirt I turn the rake backward.

Hey, that's good advice and might I add that I have grapple envy!

So drive two hours to buy the Land Pride or 1 1/2 hours for the King Kutter?

I'm sorry, the choices are a Frontier Equipment 6' or a King Kutter 6'.

I have a 25hp Kubota 4WD tractor.

You will until you buy one! The grapple is probably my favorite attachment.

Here is my favorite woods weapon. Grapple on front and backhoe with thumb on back. My brother (in pic) and I were hinge cutting maple trees around my new food plot.

I'm green...I was just looking at grapples. Still want to know about brand choice on the two used but good condition landscape rakes. Frontier or King Kutter.

That said, I was just looking at grapple kits. My little 1993 tractor isn't worth much more that what it will cost to install a set of remotes to run the hydros on the grapple and then the $1300 to put the gapple kit on my 60" bucket. Wish my money tree hadn't dried up and died!

Review your FEL lift capacity before you get too deep into the dream.

Most grapple/root takes are pretty heavy.

Grapple itself may require 75% or more of your FEL lift capacity.

I have a Landscape Rake. It is not for tearing out brush; you will tear out tines along with whatever brush comes along.

In my opinion you need an indestructible Ratchet Rake to tear out and pile. There are a number of consumer created Ratchet Rake videos on YouTube. RR is a versatile, high value tool.

Then maybe a Landscape Rake, or if you have to travel to the burn pile, a set of aluminum clamp-on Debris Forks.

I've found that Rock rake is just another name for Landscape Rake most of the time. People also call them root rakes, york rakes and yard rakes.
We have a couple new videos of our landscape rake in action here on our website. The abuse that it takes is pretty impressive.

As to the landpride vs KK, nothing wrong with either. You wont hurt either one with your tractor, and both will do a good job raking up loose debris.

So for me, it would come down to cost and condition. Is one in better shape than the other?? missing tines?? Bent tines??

IF all things are equal, I would maybe spend $50 more for the Landpride just for the name and re-sell value associated with it. I wouldnt go more than $250 for a KK or $300 on the LP, but prices in your area may be different. And if you have been looking on C-list, you will have a better idea what things are worth in your area.
