I know that's true, but I wonder why more CUT owners don't have a chisel plow. In my opinion, it is a very handy implement to have. You can put spikes on it to break up hard ground, or put long sweeps on it to cut weeds and vegetation, or smaller sweeps to cut some of the vegetation and break up the ground too.

I see too many people trying to break up hard ground with a light weight tandem disc, and that's a fool's errand unless it's a very small tract and multiple passes are no big deal. I know we don't have unlimited budgets, but most of us seem to get the OTHER tools we need, by hook or by crook.

I just think the chisel plow is a very under-appreciated tool that most people have never used and, therefore, don't understand.

I agree with pappy, I have an old Ferguson Field Cultivator which is basically a spring loaded chisel plow. I got it for my 8N and found it works great with my Kioti. Better
actually. I can run it deeper in harder ground and not struggle like I use to. It is a useful
tool and can be found at farm equip. auctions, hedgerows and the like. Even Sweet's has them. (A vendor on TBN) Follow with a disc and things would be better..

Here's a chisel plow for you Tim:

Chisel Plow, 5 chisel ripper

At that price, I would gobble that up fast. I could sure use one to uproot some big rocks in my garden also. Big difference in chisel plows and box blade scarifiers. Spring loading for one, larger plow point to bust up the hard pan and much harder to pull since they can go up to about 18" deep if you can pull them compared to only about 6" at best for box blade.

I don't want to turn this into the chisel plow thread, but I'll add that I'd want gauge wheels on any chisel plow, including a 3 point mounted one. They would make it infinitely easier to set the depth you want and just go.

The concern I would have pulling one of these plows is traction. These useless R4 tires don't bite well, especially because the clay ground around here is still damp. Dropping the boxblade scarifiers into the ground pretty much stopped me in my tracks like an anchor.

I've been searching Craigslist and making a few calls ... hopefully I'll have a disc soon.

Time for a slightly older 2wd Utility tractor with R1s ;-)

Lol, how much for your Massey. ;-)

Hey, for you, only $10,500!

Honestly, I've run both machines through the same wet/muddy area back to back, and there is simply no comparison. The R4s would be spinning like mad, in a FWA machine that weighs 2,500lbs more, and the Massey would just chug right on through as if there was nothing to it.

I'm seriously considering getting the next tractor with R1s on it....if it's wet, I can't run the LS over it with R4s anyway. Decisions, decisions....

I hear you on the R4,s. That is one of the reasons I went back to R1,s on my new tractor.R4,S=not good traction in mud or snow.Unless I had a fancy yard I can,t see the attraction of the R4,s.

Disc harrow set to cut aggressively with a little extra weight and a drag can be a wonderful thing. No need to worry to much on the drag. I have used railroad ties, fence post, section of train rail. They all work. Just cut down a tree that's in the way and chain it behind.

Well, picked up a 6.5' KK box frame disc today. Weighs around 800lbs. I had never priced them out at the store until now ... this thing sells new for around $1500 !!! Crazy

Picked this up for $700 ... pretty happy about that. It could use a sanding & fresh coat of paint, but otherwise it's in great shape.
