'Reckon I can't leave good enough alone...
I got the alternator replaced with a 1-wire version. This allows me to toss the old mechanical regulator under the dash, and re-do the wiring harness. I've wound up with something much cleaner, and (best of all) the idiot light for the alternator now works properly!

I wound up running 2 extra wires to the alternator - one which goes to the idiot light, and a ground to the headlight assembly (the hood has poor ground connectivity.

As long as I was redoing the wiring, I wound up busting one of the fuses and had to replace it with a blade fuse (and, sliced my left index fingure such that I needed 3 stiches!).

So, do to all the mucking about rewiring, tearing the dash apart and repainting all that, it was with some trepidation that I turned the key. Everything worked flawlessly! The idiot light goes out as soon as you rev up the alternator, to get it charging, and stays off. Getting a good 14 volts to the battery. The headlights, both low-beam and high-beam work great. The thing starts and runs like a dream.

Okay, I have a bit of a water leak, I need to replace the radiator hose. And I need a new lift cylinder for the FEL bucket. But I couldn't be happier with the way things turned out!
In the pictures, the first two are before-and-after shots of the inside of the dash. on both of them, I've removed the old mechanical regulator; and in the center of the new one I've circled the plug that went to the old regulator. This has been completly removed. The 3rd photo shows the new alternator, with the new regulator circled and the old one by it for comparison. What a beast. The 4th photo shows the whole thing reassembled (except for the FEL) and outside. You cant tell in the photo, but it's running (and the headlights are on ;-) ).
