kubota vs. jd

I am looking to purchase a tractor and would love input from anyone who chose the bx2230 over the jd2210. What were the deciding factors for you? Any input would be much appreciated!

I must admit to knowing very little about the BX Kubotas, but as of late, I think the BX has had so many posts with folks having problems that it would make me a bit suspicious of their quality. Perhaps we are also witnessing a relatively small number of problems percentage wise as I get the feeling the most owned tractor by members participating on this site is the BX.

That is certainly true and one of the reasons I bought a BX as a second tractor. I have always be a supporter of the underdog I guess...

Buy the JD, nothing beats perfection. You will find no problems there...


Edit: Both are fine tractors. Try them and see what you think. Then buy what you like the best. You will not be dissapointed. THat is for sure...

On the other hand, I have a neighbor with a BX 2200 and he loves it. One problem was the steering but was fixed under warranty. Other then that, he has not had any problems. His is now 3 years old.

My BX23 is 28 hours old and I haven't had any problems yet.
From the git-go I ran it at full throttle.
I've also have put it thru mud 6" deep dug out stumps mowed my fields as well as my yard, hauled stone etc. I have not babied it at all. My thing is if it can't take it I want to know now so I don't hold back.
It's still young, see what I have to say at 100 - 300 hours.
JD as far as I've seen and read makes a fine tractor.
However after reading some of the posts on JDs, they have some problems as well.
What'ca gonna do??
Make the dealers give you good demos. All the ones I tried I managed to take thru mud, lift with the FEL and dig with the BH.
I liked the BX23. My opinion!

A lot of people have looked at that comparison ( a search will give you more informaion and opinion than you really want) and some have opted for one and some have opted for the other.

The standard advice is really the best. Go test drive both and check out the dealers. You will likely find that the choice becomes obvious for you. I know this answer sounds like a cop-out, but different tractors and dealers fit people differently. In the end, I bet you will be happy with either.

Kubota has 50% plus of the market share with the BX. If it seems that there are "problems" thats why. There are way more BX's out there than anything else. We have sold about 400 of them and see very few in the shop.

The 2210 is a fine tractor, its generaly more expensive than the Kubota and offers nothing more. I have heard Deere is in the process of redesigning it because its not selling well against the BX. If your looking for a bit more machine in a sub compact the New Holland TZ offers a bit more.

I just went through this and ended up with a BX2200 (a bit cheaper than the 2230 because they were clearing them).

I went with the BX instead of the JD primarily because I prefered the the loader control and both loader control and treadle are similar in function to those on my L3010. I also preferred the way the PTO engaged on the BX (I believe the 2210 uses an electric clutch). The similarity of controls was relevant to me because the BX is my wife's machine, and now she occasionally uses my 3010 with no fear.

In general, though, the Deere hydrostatic with 2 pedals is easier to use, and the loader specs were slightly better. JD makes fine machines (well, I think the X series is way overpriced & more of a suburban toy, but then again, I have a farm).

I've noticed comments from JD owners in your similar post at JD. The pedal issue they mention is a complete non issue for me. I have a JD 510 mower with the twin pedal, a L3830 with the treadle pedal. My observations are this. Both are very easy for me to be comfortable with. Both react well to a change in direction. The Kubota design allows me to far more easily smooth out the bumps I encounter while mowing. I have yet to mix up which direction I am going on the Kubota, I do it occasionally on the JD 510. Whether the JD's is patented and no one else can have a twin pedal design , someone else can address. I think far to many people make an issue of the rocker pedal who simply sat on one at the dealer. After a very short time, the benefits, small as they may be become apparent to many. One fella posted here about buying the Kubota even though he hated, absolutley hated the rocker pedal. Within the next week he posted how wrong he was and just how comfortable it was. I must concour. I don't really have an issue with either as an owner of both.

New Holland uses this design as well.

The only problem I see with the rocker is with someone with really big feet. If your foot does not lie on the pedal properly you end up needing to toe/heel the pedal... which also works fine.

The JD dealer when I was looking tried to compare the 2210 to the kubota 7610 which I was looking at. The price was a little less for the 7610. I really liked the pedal system on the JD and I liked the way the FEL came off and on with the JD. But because of money I went with the more height and HP of the kubota. The pedal issue is really a non-issue. I have no compaints. Also the FEL on the 7610 takes all of 3 to 5 minutes to put on and take off. Which makes it a non-issue. I think that both colors make great tractors. One just seems to want more for their paint. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The point that I am trying to make is that for the price of the 2210 you could step up to a larger size Kubota. Another selling point for me was the fact that Kubota makes their motors. JD also makes their's but they ended up buying the company that makes them. But as stated earlier, BUY the one that pleases you and fits you, and of course the one that has the better dealer.

Not knowing what the pedal on the BX is like I can tell you that while my size 13's aren't huge, they fit the pedal design on my L3830 very easily. In fact, I'm not sure what you mean by fitting. You do realize that it is not typical to place your whole foot on the pedal.

That's a good point RaT - I have the dual pedal design... do I think it is more comfortable to use... Yes. Have I ever hit the wrong pedal and gone X instead of Y... Yes /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. If I'm turned around and looking over my shoulder I've developed a technique to avoid the going wrong way syndrome... I move my foot to the outside edge of the reverse pedal to "verify" I have the right one. Like all of us, I think we all grow accustomed to the equipment we have and compensate for it where needed.

In the scheme of things like this - The person buying has to decide which flavor suits them best.

I have been reading this thread and will echo what many of the posters have said: simply let your ergonomic needs and the quality of the dealer make your decision. I can sing the praises of my BX all day long, but I would have considered the JD if it had been on the market when I bought in 2000. I also won't say a bad thing about the JD. I think if I was considering buying another sub-CUT now, I would very carefully consider the Case- New Holland machines. I am very impressed with several items they feature.

I would agree with this statement. I looked at one the other night, with a mower, no FEL and I was impressed with what I saw. If I was looking again I would seriously consider the Case/New Holland.

Better 3 pt set up
Mounted tool box
Cool hood design
beefed up MMM, looked easy to remove, better pin design
Nice seat

Would I trade the BX for these little things NO, BUT if I was looking they may swing me towards the Case/New Holland.

I guess when you have a copy of anything you can always make things a little better. Kubota did not have this advantage, BUT they did a heck of a job from scratch. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I looked at both the 2210 and the 2230. I went with the 2230 mostly cuz it was cheaper. I like the 2230 pedal and think you would be less prone to go the wrong way with it, but my big problem is the tractor keeps moving when I take my foot off the pedal. One thing I liked about the JD was the included tach. Also, I'll always wonder if a JD would have been less of a "rust bucket" than the 2230. My other big gripe is with the 2230 deck that keeps changing cutting heights on its own.
