Tractor
John Deere 790
My Kubota L 4740 is a great tractor, however, after an hour in the field bushoging I feel like I have been riding a bull. Is there a comparable John Deere unit that is more stable ? The 4747 also heats up in the summer after 25 minutes of cutting sunflower. Not Happy with this unit, purchased 7-22-09, 55hrs.

Overheating:
Have you cleaned out the screen in front of the radiator and the radiator itself? Those being plugged up will restrict airflow through the radiator and can cause the tractor to overheat.

Rough Ride:
Do you have a spring ride seat (if so, have you adjusted the spring tension with the knob in front of the seat)? How fast are you going?
An air ride seat or seat base would be a lot cheaper than switching tractors.

Bandit : Welcome to TBN

My wifes sister is reading this also from behind my R-shoulder. This girl knows a thing or two about tractors. She (Sandy) asked me to ask you : Could it be the OP needs more meat on his rump ? In regards to the ride on your Bota and a bull. I guess only a woman would think about that. :)
Bandit you might want to send her a pic and cure her curiousity (w/clothes on of course).
Besides what others have suggested as far as overheating maybe a homemade grille screen or one in front of grille guard would work when dealing with sunflowers.
Only 55 hrs since July 2009.
Also are your tires filled ? Overinflated ?

Welcome to TBN:welcome: I mow at 3 mph, any faster and I don't walk so good the next day. Get a good set of hearing protectors/earphones, MP3 player and a cold beverage (sweet tea for me), and enjoy your seat time. Most of us are using CUTs and SCUTs, they work well within their design limits. Going too fast with too much load will cause overheating. Most operate in the upper part of the temp gauge during normal operations. As was posted before, check air flow, keep it clean, adjust the seat, and most of all, have fun. I get paid to work, so seat time has to be fun as I don't get paid.

I'd wonder of your air pressure in the tires... As far as the cooling I'd be watching the radiator to see if it is clean. Some gauges read more towards the warm then cold.

Someone else may be able to tell you where their gauge is reading.

If you decide to attempt to find and correct the problems instead of trading, and your tractor is down for any length of time, perhaps you can use your John Deere 790 that is listed in your personal profile. JD 790-Engine-30HP-PTO HP- 24-26. Good luck.:tractor:

DEFINITELY make sure the radiator screen is not clogged.

That happened to me.

All the whispy tops of some 3'-4' tall weeds I was mowing were floating around in the air, & the tractor's radiator fan sucked in enough of them to completely clog the screen.

Yep, check the radiator, adjust the seat and let some air out of the tires.

Something just doesn't seem right about this.

You've had it for over 2 years and just now finding this out. I hate to use the
"T" word but when someone comes in like this and immediately asking for
comparable JD I smell a Troll. Why would JD that weighs about same, nearly
the same wheelbase, ride any different? "Ride the Bull" I smell Bullstuff.

Our L3940 is the most controllable, smoothest, stablest tractor we've ever used
for bush hogging and it's been through some rough places. If you're blasting
through high sunflowers then yes the screen is going to clog.

When looking for a field tractor and caring about the ride quality I look at these factors.

Wheelbase (longer and wider is more stable and comfortable as it smooths out the bumps better)
Seat/Seat suspension (a good seat with support and excellent suspension is ideal, air ride is tops in my mind)
Tires (Radial tires are ideal for smoother ride and better traction but cost more money)

New Holland had their supersteer front axle and that option pushed the front axle forward and it made a huge difference in ride quality compared to the same exact tractor with standard front axle. Since not every brand has that option you will want to look more towards the seat/seat suspension and upgrading your tires to radials. Almost every utility tractor is going to ride the same if equipped the same, the color paint has no effect on the ride.

And if its really a major issue for you, John Deere and a few other high end tractors have suspension systems on their tractors to smooth out the ride even more but that option alone most likely cost more then you paid for your entire tractor.

Also, another factor I failed to mention in regards to ride quality is your ground speed and ground condition. No suspension in the world will help if your traveling too fast in rough ground. It just doesn't work that way. If your fields are rough then slow down. If their so rough your operating slower then you want then rework the fields and smooth them out so you can mow faster. Good luck to you.

And I don't think you can go wrong with either Kubota or John Deere utility tractors. Their the two brands I look at mainly now and both have great reputations.

I own a l4740. I have 720 hours and is being used for snow removal, landscaping and used to snig logs. No problems so far except for the bad seat. It bottoms out evan when adjusted hard. Something is wrong and the dealer refuses to fix it. He was wanting me to buy a $1000 seat. I did not want to break down the relationship a week after I bought my tractor but I was peeved.

The seat will bottom out that's for sure. It's comfortable otherwise, especially since you can adjust the seat back. I wonder if a set stronger springs of the same length would be available out there somewhere, maybe McMaster-Carr?

Good advice - could save a lot compared to trading or seat upgrade.
Haven't heard many other folks with the GLs talk about overheating, so I'd check the radiator screen before doing anything else.

Thanks to all. Especially, Robert in NY. Not sure how to respond to Grateful11, Maybe you just need to be nicer. I'm not making up a story to express my displeasure with the Kubota 4740. Kubota is a great product, we all agree on this, however, the dealer immediately acknowledged the overheating problem with this unit. He also suggested that a larger Kubota unit with the larger front tires would cure the "ride the bull" problem. He said he had other complaints on rough ride problem.
Also, Grateful11, I don't fully understand "T" word or troll, but, it did not take me two years to notice the rough ride. And, I do not blast through any field on my farm. I'll say it again, that you need to be nicer.

A comparable JD will ride the same. Ride is determined by wheelbase, tire size, tire type, and air pressure in the tires. Industrial tires pumped hard ride like steel wheels.
As for overheating, I can run mine maxed out on a hot day and it does not over heat. Check your radiator.
