See that black thing with the yellow dot on it, left hand side of the picture? That's the pressure sensor, and when it triggers, I think that yellow dot pops up. It hadn't popped up, but the EMU was sure unhappy...

My L4060 is more or less the same but mounted in a different spot. The rubber lips thing in the right is a drain you tap to let out dust & other debris that settles to the bottom of the housing.

I'd replace it on mine, but wouldn't wory about a a sheet metal & epoxy fix either. As long as it shields the filter from the worst of the dust & all of the potential water while letting in enough air it will work.

I'm sure the OEM design acts as a bit of a centrifuge to spin dust out of the air & prolong filter life. But basic filter designs with no fancy flow paths have worked for decades.

Yes, the air intake tube just bends back and is an open tube.

Odd damage. New bonnet? Hope it isn’t starter fluid damage. Something external or internal caused that damage. Easy to see on a routine inspection. Agree a patch would work although I would pony up and get it replaced on such a new machine.

The tractor came to me used, delivered yesterday, with a hole in the front plastic grill, and the damage shown on the air filter housing. No idea how it got there, and of course the seller claims complete ignorance.


The engine and chassis were covered in some sort of brown dust, and it wasn't dirt. When I worked on it yesterday, my arms soon started itching as if I'd been working with fiberglass. So today I got out the hot water pressure washer and gave everything a good bath. About half way through, a ring of plastic about 2" across got blown out from under the radiator. It was the intake snorkel. The contour matched that of the hole in the right end of the housing. So I snipped off that corner of the sheet metal patch and duct taped it into place. Put the cap on and reinstalled the air cleaner, and all is good. So I owe you guys that suggested I'd closed up the intake snorkel an apology. I taped right over the snorkel hole because I didn't even know the thing had an intake snorkel; it was nowhere to be found.:confused2:

You can quickly shut down any diesel by cutting off the air intake, it's almost instant. And it wouldn't require sensors or an ECU, even an old diesel will behave this way. This is a good trick to remember if you ever have a runaway diesel or a broken key switch or shutoff solenoid. Just stuff a rag in the snorkel and it will cut off quickly. One time I had a paper towel sucked into the snorkel and the engine shut off quicker than if I had turned the key.

Buying equipment without seeing it is a new experience with me too. Trust in the owner, dealer and transporter requires lots of pictures and communications. Only done it twice in several years. Comes with a lot of worry. Pristine and low price rarely come together.

Your tractor was damaged at some point. Maybe during transportation? You may never know.

I bought a backhoe for my M59 and had it truck shipped. It was the 3rd smallest thing crammed on that trailer. The driver was good, I had ready rigging slings and experience. It was all the M59 could do to make that lift. With the backhoe on the ground the driver said “Wow! I was sure worried how we were going to get that off without damage.”

I waited too late before buggering up the grill on mine. Had been gathering materials before I got a unseen stick in the grill.

Now loaded for bear.

I did a fly'n'ride buy on a motorcycle a while back, and that was a wonderful experience. This one, not so much so far. Looking very carefully at one of the photos from the ad, the darker hole in the grill plastic does show, but just barely like you have to know it's there to see it. The seller turned out to be something of a shyster, telling me there was no damage when I asked straight up if there was any. Of course the purchase contract specifies no warranty, so there's probably no recourse, especially since some of their Yelp! feedback is fairly negative. But there was plenty of room in the price for some repairs, and as a used vehicle, I fully expected to find a few issues. But I've still got my fingers crossed I don't come across anything major.

"Loaded for bear" is a heck of an understatement, SD! Looks like you could push over a mountain with that grill! It would be just my luck that the stick would go through the plastic on the side, though. That's what happened on my old Kubota.:duh:

That exterior damage was hard to notice.

Different subject. Is that the exhaust pipe thru the front grill above the axle?
