the actual horsepower an pto hp are most always 1o to 15hp differance based on the max engine rpms.almost all of the older tractors are based on 2500rpms.

I have two old Ford tractors, neither engine will turn as fast as 2500 rpm. Old JD's, Fergies, Massy's, and AC's turn even slower. Your PTO information is wrong too. As Kuboman said, PTO hp can be estimated as a percentage of net hp. Your 10 to 15 hp drop is too vauge when comparing tractors from 18hp to 500hp. Philip.

Agree 100% We have an old 8n ford, and they are only rated to run 2000RPM. Most she will even rev to is 2100.

And since it is a 27 PTO HP tractor, does that mean it makes 37-42 @ the engine and only 12-17 at the drawbar using bigbulls logic.

Or how about a JD 9630 that makes 530 HP at the engine. Does that make it 515 @ the PTO and 500 @ the drawbar:confused2:

Or what about a kubota BX24 that makes 23HP at the engine. Does that mean 13 @ the pto and 3 @ the drawbar:confused2:

Parasitic and drivetrain losses are always best expressed as a percentage.

HP ratings are interesting in electric motors as well - I used to work in a woodworking shop and we would have 100lb motors rated at 3 horsepower or less and a craftsman vaccuum is rated at 5. As I understand it, the craftsman rates at the max power right before it burns up or something (not sustainable usable power) and the other is rated to run all day and night at 3 HP.:confused2:

We also have a 16 HP farmall cub growing up which would run circles around a new 16 HP tractor so in the end I guess don't buy on BS marketing - buy from a trusted supplier a a reasonable price but not the claimed highest numbers at the best price.

Yep, numbers sell. Most dont even care to understand it. A lot of smaller electric motors like vaccuum cleaners and shop vacs are rated at their start-up amerage. Most electric motors pull double the current when first turned on. Double the current at start-up also means double the wattage, which is then converted to the HP.

And then their are the 5 HP air compressor motors. Most are only rated at ~ 15A 220v, and they weigh about 35lbs and have a 3/4" shaft. Then you look at a TRUE 5HP farm duty motor. They weigh about 130lbs and have a 1-1/2" shaft. Same power?? I think NOT.

And its funny you mentioned the 16HP farmall cub. We have a 27HP 8n. You can currently buy new lawn tractors at lowes or tsc that have 27HP B&S or kohler engines. If I did a motor swap with the 8N, It probabally wouldnt have enough power to even drive the tractor.

Slow turning larger displacement 8N engine makes lots more torque! Philip.

No one is poking fun at you, just trying to present accurate information to the forum, and I questioned some of your responses. I think we all have knowledge of tractors or we would not be participating. Philip.

Nope I can say I have never seen that.

that's a lot of made up and incorrect info fit into just two sentences.
usually it takes an entire paragraph. ;)

Gosh, none of you guys ever showed cattle at the county fair when you were kids? Part of the fun was sleeping on hay bales in the fair cattle barn at least one night while your calves/heifers/etc. were at the fair.:)

I've never been to a county fair that had farm animals. Most of them were traveling carnival rides. Ferris wheels and such. Really shady looking guys that wanted to take your tickets in exchange for you throwing their balls at stacks of bottles.

I'm sorry, just couldn't leave it alone! Kioti lb1914: 19 hp gross, 17.1 hp PTO. That is a 1.9 hp difference! less than 5% loss Ahhh.... the advantages of a tiny 20A generator and mechanical trany! I'm live'n in a whole different world of efficiency compared to some of these hydro tractors :D (being that I have one of the smaller tractors at TBN.. I have to be able to brag about something! )
