I took it off and cleaned everything, put it all back the way it was...but now when I hook up the battery cable it fires the starter all by its lonesome:mad:

Did you disassemble the solenoid for this cleaning?

You have to be getting 12 volts to the starter. Either the solenoid is stuck or you are wiring it wrong. The way it should be is battery, solenoid, starter. There is 3 lugs on the starter. One for the lead from the switch, one for the lead from the battery and usually a small white lead going up to power the fuse box then all the tractors accessories, and then a lug with a brass or metal bar going down to the starter. Are you sure you are not putting the 12 volt wire from the batter on this last lug?

I put battery to post that connects the solenoid to the starter. Isn't the solenoid supposed to thrust the gear on starter outward as it spins??? The starter is spinning but the gear isn't being pushed out. Mean anything?

How would I confirm the key switch is dead?

There's a diagram here that might help you understand the wiring positioning described above. http://www.alfamilano.com/articles/milano-starter-relay/original-starter-wiring.jpg There are only three connections to make. The battery cable goes to the large post on the solenoid. The fuse panel wire also connects to that post. To the smaller post you connect the wire from the keyswitch.

If you suspect a bad keyswitch, disconnect the wire you think belongs to it. See if your problem returns. If it does, you probably have reversed the two small wires.

Had the battery wire on the wrong post of the solenoid? That is my guess.

Or turned on the terminals so they were touching each other.

Guess we'll never know :( sigh....

I did have the battery on wrong post (duh)! But, the starter has finally quit for good. The gear has separated from the bearing. I tried removing it, but figure it's time to replace the darn thing.
