Some buds and I would 'find' ammo we didn't have to account for while doing guard duty in Europe. Those 5.56 would slip right through 5-6 sand bags and leave a nice 5.56 hole in the wood behind them. The wood was part of some bunkers in a hillside, so not too sure how far they went into that.

I like the idea of using burglars and other volunteers for backstops. Don't have to worry about innocent people, (humans), getting hurt.

I liked the wording.

Good info BCP, thanks. Could you use pea gravel and roofing tar as a substitute?

I would think roofing tar would work just as well as asphalt as they are very similar. Just need a plastic binder to hold the rocks together. I wonder if you need crushed aggregate or round pea gravel.
That mix could be repaired easily with a weed burner also, just lay flat and heat to remelt the tar.

I do know that a 50 cal black powder round will go through a 5 gal bucket of frozen roofing tar. It couldn't quite exit; it left a round dent on the farside.

The gravel does all the work. The tar/asphalt holds it in place.

I would rather use loose gravel in a container for a target shooting backstop. You hope to have all your shots concentrated in a very small area. The tar mix won't refill the cavities your bullets will make. Loose gravel will.

I've always found that 3/8 steel plate mounted at about 30degree would deflect the bullets down into a nice sand box. Most potent that I tried (in basement) was 30-06 at 30', no problems as long as I had good ear protection.

We did this but at a 45 degree angle and a quarter inch plate.

i don't trust it.. I have a shooting target with swinging target plates along the bar.. you shoot them and they spin. It's IMHO.. for sub caliber or pistol.. but we had it out a while back. at 40yds I hit one of the spinner plates with my 30-06 180gr .. plates are 1/2" plate steel.

it went about 7/16 the waythru, left a thin membrane bubble on the back side

I stopped shooting it with a rifle at that point..
