Just got windows 8.1. Portrait pics show up as landscape on TBN ????

When I got Win8.1, I was told about Classic Shell. Downloaded it and was back in business with a familiar looking "window" and access to files.

Yeah the best things in life are free, like Classic Shell. Unfortunately they will be history next year since WIN10 will have a resurrected Start Button.

Sounds like you were uploading pics directly from camera to tbn instead of importing to pc folder and then pick pics from the pc folder directly.

I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I'm not quite that dull

but no offence taken because I know what I am telling you makes no sense.
