Just bought a boom pole

/ Just bought a boom pole #21
I just got an old MF 50 this weekend (first one I've owned). I bought it in the home town of "The Andy Griffith Show". I'm making a jib for the three point hitch so that I can lift some timbers. I need it to work on a sculpture I'm making, not to mention bush hogging the pasture. This is the image that I'm working off of. I think it is Australian made.

I'm not sure if I'll put that bend in it though.

I picked up a boom pole when I got my tiller. The tiller weighs about 700# and I didn't think the FEL would reach over to the center of the trailer bed without bonking into the trailer wheel first. Plus, I didn't have any hooks on my FEL at the time. The boom pole made unloading easy.

That boom pole gets a lot of use. It's great for all sorts of lifting and dragging tasks and makes a dandy little brush hauler. When I'm clearing brush or limbing a tree I lay a choker chain out and stack the limbs across the chain with about 2 feet of the butt ends hanging over. When I'm done I gather up the chain, cinch it, hook it to the end of the pole, lift, and away we go.

Haven't tried the logging tongs on it yet - maybe this weekend if the ground stays hard.

Nice boom pole.. Just a suggestion before you attempt to lift anything heavy. I'd run something solid across the top like you see on most boom poles. Right now the load will be compressing the supports you have welded underneath. If you weld on top, the load will pull that part into tension. Much stronger. Just my thoughts.

I did some more work on the boom pole,

I lined the piece of pipe with another 10ft. piece of pipe, it was so tight i had to take a sledge hammer and drive it all the way through.

It likes 3/8 of an in. to be a solid 10ft. piece.

The boom poles are pretty handy for picking up a drag on the turns too. Not to mention not having to leave it in the field. (Or tearing up lawn getting it back to the shed or coral.)

Bob in Va or others, how did you attach your boom pole in your FEL bucket? I don't have a welder but had thought of straps, chains and binders. Later this summer I hope to start work on a pole barn and was considering lifting the trusses in place with the loader bucket and boom pole.

I bolted a hitch on top of my bucket, i really didn't want to weld it.

I move trailers around a lot and keep the backhoe on most of the time, so i decided to put the hitch on my bucket.

I took a piece of pipe and made my boom pole, i took another piece and put it on the end to make it tighter in the hitch.

When i built my garage i didn't have a boom pole, so i took a piece of pipe and strapped it on and had to lift the trusses up 12ft, it worked but this way will be better, and I'm planning on another build this summer.

Here is a picture how i mounted mine.

Speaking of boom poles, I reconfigured this one to mount on the front of my Power-Trac. Works real well. Can reach up as high as 16 ft. It can still be used as a 3PT boom pole.

That looks like a strong built boom pole.

I didn't hardly recognize you in your avatar, did you grow that overnight.:D

The boom pole is well made, and I was thinking of modifying the end piece with some hitch type tubing. I want to mount a hydraulic chain saw on the end.

As far as the beard, that was my Christmas look until a couple of weeks ago. until I trimmed it back some.

I started one yesterday. I'll try to get pictures.. I'm using square tubing (and other stuff that's laying around. Am planning on switchable attachments on the end like a moss rake, etc..

I've not yet figured out how to put a chainsaw on it.. :)

I like how you put the brace on it, do you know how much weight it will lift.

That would be a good ideal with the chain saw,i would like to see pictures of it one day.

Did you see the video of the guy that put a chain saw on the end of a ladder.:D

It will lift a 450 lb welder/generator at the second hook.

Yes, I did see that post about the ladder and chainsaw. Good old redneck ingenuity.

I agree with Diamondpilot, its probably on my bottom of the list to, but they are handy for putting up trusses, and maybe lifted something in the bed of a truck so you don't have to get so close with the tractor. I didn't have one and was needing one for the next build.

Thanks for the advice.

I guess I was not very clear. I have a 3 point boom pole that I have used 1 time in 5 years. Its at the bottom of my use list. Now my boom pole that I built for my FEL I use all the time. I gets used probably every other week. It is very strong and will easily lift my 5' Ford Bush Hog that is built like a tank.

I do see some flexing on it but it has never bent. I was planning on adding some top bracing but just never go around to in and got put on the back burner after I used it with no issues. I do agree the top bracing is a good idea though.

I use mine to pull my water pump out of the well. I attach a pulley to the end and run the rope from the pump through it. I then attach the rope to my truck and pull until the pump comes up, 300'.

I had brackets welded on the lower part of my 3 pt boom pole and bolted on a ramsey badger electric winch (2500 lb) and remote selenoid switch. It's on the back of a IH 140 tractor. The cable is strung through a pulley at the top of the pole. I've lifted (winched) 650lbs. Beyond that the front wheels start comming up. It increases the vertical lift range (like from pickup bed to the ground and from trailer bed up and over side rails) and simplifies skidding logs. I don't have a loader.

I want to change to a hydraulic winch that works off remotes. The electric really sucks the amps (100 amps) and gives my alternator a real load. It works good and I've used it alot. If interested I could post a pic.
