I got lucky (ish).
No problems with the fuel lines or carburetor.
No problems with electrical (ignition) other than melted wires.
Thought I should post in case anyone else is debating on rebuilding.

Plus the importance of working fire extinguishers.
Now all the family vehicles have them too.

Use scented dryer sheets under the hood and on the motor. Mice despise scented dryer sheets or get a cat. one of the 2. I use dryer sheets in my big tractors.

Spraying the mouse nest area with bleach/water mixture will deter a mouse returning to visit and/or nest. Covers the urine smell that attracts them back.
Find it much more effective over the last 55 years of occasional mouse problems. Effective for raccoons as well.

Not something I'd want to do, especially on the motors which is where they like to set up houses and make a mess.

I keep my RV in the barn with the tractors and implements but all the access points on the RV are screened so they cannot get in.

For comparison I also have a John Deere S100 that is similar in design but newer.
This was after mowing my yard. I wanted to check to see if any grass would be collecting near the exhaust. Looks pretty clean. I did notice the plastic hinge gets warm.

If that were mine I'd be investing in some self adhesive insulating material for that plastic. Even if it doesn't light on fire it will dry out and break over time

Our neighbors ZTR burst into flames last summer. I've always taken a blower to my mower after every mow, to keep it clear of all debris. The tractor and the mower get this treatment before shedding. Luckily there is no plastic near the exhaust on either, both are metal machines.
