John Deere 5210
John Deere 5210 I purchased this and changed the filter And topped off fluid. It first appeared to work fine and then the steering and lift arms would not function. Not familiar with hydraulics. Any thoughts. Thank you

Is the fluid still showing full on the stick? I had a 5310 that I changed the filter on once I think. I'm not sure I lost enough to even add any.

Since it happened after you changed the filter I would think it has to be related.

Is there a simple way to bleed out air. I suspect the filter change introduced air. I thought it may purge by running the system or turning the steering back and forth.

A bad seal on a hydraulic filter is a possibility. A common error is a doubled up gasket. The old gasket can separate from the filter and stay on the tractor, then the new filter and gasket won't seal properly.

It should purge itself out. I don't know of any way to purge air. I sold my tech manual when I sold my 5310 so I can't check and see if there is anything about it in the manual. Is the steering doing nothing or just hard to turn? I would think if your fluid is correct and you can operate thing to some degree, run it and see if it starts getting better.

I would think it would be leaking if that were the issue. This tractor has a spin on filter like an auto oil filter.

The spin on filters are the type I was referring to, but yes, I would assume it would be leaking also.
I used an aftermarket (spin on) suction filter on one of my diesel zero turns several years ago and the hst wouldn’t operate at all. There were no fluid leaks, but I don’t know exactly why it caused problems. The oem filter fixed that issue.

Good point. It could be the filter if it's not OEM. I never put aftermarket parts on my JD tractors or ZTs.

I did check to see that old gasket was removed. No leaks. Oem Napa filter. The lift arms do very slowly raise and I can feel them trying to raise. They did suddenly jump up a little once. Steering is hard to turn. Feels like no assist.

So you got the filter at NAPA? I would get a JD filter and see if that makes a difference. I know that sounds silly but you did change the filter and now it's not working. It has to be air in the system or lack of flow. The filter would cause lack of flow. That NAPA filter is not OEM.

Sorry. I just replaced with what was on the tractor

Let us know if you get it working so we know what the issue was. Good info for others.

I also noticed the pro spins slow. Not as fast as I am used to seeing. Related?

Yes. Pto The fluid is very clean. Should I drain it and check the screen near the PTO.

The seal on the filter is very critical since it is under suction, it won't show any leaks (as it sucks air into the system) The hydraulic system shares the oil with the transmission, clutch/s (some tractors), and brakes. It is very poor economy to cheap out on filters or fluid. There isn't a common specification organization unlike engine oil's API. Any failure in these systems is expensive and difficult to repair. Failure debris is quickly distributed and hard to clear out. It just lurks in the system nooks and crannies waiting to be dislodged and cause another failure.
