Tractor
Mit dozer,John Deere 410C, Kubota, New Holland.
Just purchased this tractor. It ran strong when I tried it but after delivery it ran poorly and is fuel starved.
I have ordered an owners manual but don't have it yet.
I suspect an injector pump problem based on what the guy told me when he dropped it off. He said if it started losing power, remove the top line from the injection pump which I believe is the return line, clean it and it will run good.
Of course 15 minutes into my first dig this happened. Didn't help. But doing research it seems stuff from the injector pump o ring or something clogs the return line check valve and shuts the pump down.
But if he had not told me this I would suspect the filter which I am going to change first. (a lot cheaper than an injection pump)
Now my first problem. This is the square glass filter. It looks simple to remove with just an apparent clip holding it.
My problem. I am not sure how this works and don't want to break anything. Just how do you get this clip to release? I pried but it doesn't seem to do the trick.
Any secrets in priming it after a fuel change. My thought was to run the starter by shorting across at the starter. This should run the pump without starting. I don't see any hand primer.
Thanks.

I'll bet check valve on IP return line is plugged. Remove timing window screws then pry gasket loose from pump then test to see if engine will run correctly. Window is encircled in blue. It's also possible fuel control solenoid is heating up & shutting down.

Thanks Jim.
I cleaned the check valve because that was what the seller told me to do if this happened. Of course after he delivered it.
I changed the filter and no change.
I just removed the plate you said and it ran much better. Ran up to 2000 rpms with no load. Don't know what it is supposed to turn.
Now what?

Just tried it again with the plate back on and it went to 2300 rpms no load on a brief trial. The most I was ever able to get was 1500 rpms and it went downhill from there. Maybe 8 or 900 rpms getting it back home. It would hardly move.

More than likely the fiber drive ring in IP is deteriorating and will need to be replaced by dis-assembly of IP

I was afraid you were going to say that.
I don't suppose this is something I can do myself?

I haven't dis-assembled an IP but have read where it's not difficult for a mechanically inclined person. """IMPORTANT thing is cleanliness.""" On another tractor site I frequent a former member stated he repaired many IP's on the tailgate of his service truck.

Merry Christmas back to you & yours.

I'm glad to render what little knowledge I have as I think it helps keep my mental wheels turning as I get older. I wish tractor discussion forums such as this one & the other ones I frequent were available back in the 70's through late 80's when I was a JD dealer service manager as they contain a wealth of information.

Your right Jim. There is a wealth of knowledge on this and many other forums. I am active on a boating forum. Been boating for 60 years and have learned a bit.
Its nice to be able to pass on some of the things I have learned.
Been on it for a while with 30,000 posts.
Well I talk a lot. :)
Thanks again.
Btw, I bought this machine to do a job. I have to tear down a large masonry home that is in a sink hole.
Going to see how far I can get with the way its running. I will get the IP rebuilt by someone more qualified than I am.

Hmmm, a home in a sink hole.. How deep is the sink hole? A pic of it would be great..

Well running it lasted about 15 minutes. Pump rebuild time
A pic of the home wouldn't show much. It was repaired with steel pipe down 40 feet and a platform put under the foundation.
Then 13 truckloads of cement was pumped under pressure raising the home.
It lasted about 4 years then sunk again. Not much and right in the middle of the house. I think all that cement crushed the limerock under it but that is just a guess.
No one is going to try to repair it again and I now own it. Its next door so I gain a nice garage and more lawn to mow.

The drop in the center of the house is only about 1 1/2 feet. Most of the house is OK. Its right in the kitchen so cupboards are away from the ceiling as well as a couple of interior walls.
The other problem is a small tornado took off some shingles and being unoccupied, no one noticed so rain damage of other parts of the house.
I live in Florida as you might suspect. Will update my profile.
Thanks.

I've seen tractors such as yours run several 100 hrs after the glass ball & spring is removed from fitting on IP that fuel return line attaches to. If you choose to remove ball & spring do so at your own risk as possible IP damage can occur if altered IP is run too many hrs without installing new drive ring.

Thanks Jim. I'll give it some thought. Read this somewhere else but it also said it would just get worst.

Well today I removed the glass ball. My rpms are back and it was plugged.
We'll see what happens but I should be able to get my job done before rebuilding the pump.
We'll see.
Thanks again Jim.
