Hello.
I know Someone here knows the answer to this question.
Engine is T04045TF150 diesel

I have a John Deere engine 1997 runs great except one thing ithing it smells horrible It's either the exhaust or blow but I can't figure it out As you can see in pictures there's a lot of blow by all over the engine This engine goes to a wood chipper And at the end of the day you just feel horrible And have a weird taste in your mouth I know the engine is old but it runs great but I feel like I'm missing something.
Do I need to run some Additive
I checked where the exhaust tightens up I didn't really see any leaks.
I took to John deere service they said no blow by problems and was not stopped up.
They also said no exhaust leaks but recommended using deere oil only versus rotella?
any thoughts are much appreciated.
i am to the point now of just selling it but hate to because it still runs good. I just cant figure out what makes it smell so bad.
Any thoughts

Welcome to TBN
More info is needed for correct answer. I think Shell Rotella oil is not causing any odors. I utilize that oil in my tractors engines.

TX Jim.
I agree it ain't t the oil. They said blow by tube wasn't stopped up nor was there any leaks around turbo. But it's like you have been inhaling fumes all day or blow by. But nothe has changed over the years. I thought it was me but my other guys noticed it also.
Thanks for your response.

What pictures? Well…have you changed fuel supplier recently, have they changed their supplier? Fuel contamination by a fired employee? When was the last injector service? Air filter checked? Could be anything…

Do a test on the fuel!

Or, drain out the present fuel and fill with fuel from a completely different source/refinery. See what happens.

There may be times off spec oil gets blended into on spec product. In other cases some product that is completely illegal is blended into fuel oil to save on reclamation cost. With diesel this type of situation may be more common than thought.

It sounds like the engine is burning furnace oil instead of diesel.

Do you know that the smell would be different or as described by the OP if that were the case?

The smell in the exhaust has been my experience in DD 671 TIB's.
