Backhoe John Deere 310D Starter Problem

Got a question ! The flange on starter broke off because nut loosened up and it contacted flywheel. I heard some grinding and shut it down but worried about the broken pieces that fell next to flywheel. Is there an easy way to get those pieces out. Maybe a inspection or timing hole somewhere? Replacing starter but worried about those pieces. Thanks !
