I have just finished replacing the charge pump and one of the pick up lines on my 2440. The Hi-Lo works, the power steering works again, the three point hitch works, the only thing i cant get to work is the PTO. When i pull up on the lever it makes a whining/groaning sound but it wont engage. The tractor also makes a groaning sound at lower RPMS but clears up when given throttle (1800 RPM and higher). The groaning sounds somewhat like a power steering pump with bad bearings. Could someone give me somewhere to start with diagnosing this? Thanks!

If this was my MF, I'd read up on the pto component of the 2 stage clutch and hope it was simply out of adjustment.

Its a hydraulically controlled PTO. No 2 stage clutch on this one.

Remove PTO engage lever between the gearlevers and check inside if the very small c-clip is still in its place ? To repair ...gearshiftcover must come off .

Alright so I pulled the shift cover off and it seems like the c-clip has fallen out. But I can not figure out how to remove the clutch control valve cover to replace the c-clip. Any suggestions?

Remove gearshiftcover...remove plug infront of shiftcover...remove valve and replace c-clip...take care not to strip valve...replace and test !

Pulled the tractor back apart and found the fibers in the PTO clutch were destroyed. Starting with a new PTO clutch pack.

Yes the independent PTO clutch. The new clutch pack is in the mail. Ill update when the tractor is back together and working.

Did you ever get your tractor running again? I assume so, my 1840 had a slipping PTO and it resulted in a new clutch pack, but the cause was a bracket on the internal hydraulic line to the PTO piston had chaffed and worn a large hole in it so PTO piston was not getting full pressure. New hydraulic line no longer has the bracket so unlikely to reoccur in my lifetime. Apparently this issue was common in the 1840/2440 machines.
