Even with the $1700.00 added in - you did very, very well assuming there isn't much more wrong with it. You might want to get a Pro opinion (evaluation) to determine whether there are any other hidden problems. But I'm sure you have figured that out by now-

I got the mid pto to work today. The ball and spring were jammed behind the pto lever. I'm afraid changing the housing is over my head. I called a few john deere dealers today and got estimates all over the place ( from ~$3000 to $5500 parts and labor) but everyone wants me to bring it in to say for sure.

SO, how much is the tractor worth? I will probably just sell it. Tractor is a little too small for me anyway. My dilemma:
Fix it completely. Sell it as is and explain whats wrong with it. I wonder how much a belly mower would be for one of these?

You took it apart, buy the broken and missing parts and put it back together. You have to put it back together anyway. If you can buy the parts for $2000.00 you could probably make a $1000 profit if you sell it. JMO

Well, I don't know if its that simple. I only took the cover off and pulled the pto lever shaft.

To change the housing, Both the axles have to come out. I think you might even have to time the gears. Looking at the parts diagram, it looks like a ton of parts go together in there. One John Deere shop said they think it will take 40 hrs labor!
