JD 4300
The front axle fluid on my JD 4300 is a bit low. I was going to add some JD 20C BUT last time I changed front axle fluid I used 20D.
Can the 2 be mixed together?

Found my answer in the manual.
JDM J20d and JDM J20c can be mixed even in the transmission.

Shop foreman and one of the other mechanic's at the local JD dealer informed me that they use a 50:50 mix of 20C and 20D.

Said that the 20D was too "watery" for the summer and the 20C was too "heavy" in the winter. So, they mix 'em.

I've changed out all my tractor's to the Lo-Vis - 100%. Tractor's are all in an outside shed but unheated. It's pretty cold up here in the winter!

Long story - short - won't hurt anything.

Well, I don't know about the 4300, but on 2520 the front axle actually calls for gear oil, not the hyrdo-oil.

On the owners manual for the the 2520 it says "DO NOT mix oils." Now it says you can run either one, but it doesn't state that you should/could mix them.

I know.. think that was in reference to engine oils - but, I'm only passing along what the local JD mechanics have done and still do!

Personally, I don't mix either - engine oil or hyd fluid. However, the range of ingredients that go into engine oils is considerably different than hydraulic oil.

Only reason I know what the local guys do is; I've been having a curious problem with the hydraulics on my new tractor and I figured it was due to heavy, viscious hydraulic oil with low winter temps.

So, I asked them if my problem could be due to "thick hyd oil" and they responded with the 50:50 JD 20C and 20D mixture.

I disagree. Mixing different viscosities of any fluid is not normally a good thing. They don't necessarily mix together well. Every oil product is different. I won't even mix different brands of oil even at the same viscosity. They are not made the same. Maybe l am ****, but from my years of knowledge and experience that is what I practice.

My reference to the mixing was in the middle of hydraulic fluid section. I'm sure in a short term not an issue. But honestly swapping out all the oil is cheaper than any repair.

I'll be happy to pass along your "disagreement" to them... :D

My first comment was merely an opinion. And most likely nothing bad would happen.

My second comment was about where I read "no mixing".
