HI, I'M NEW ON HERE, BUT I HAVE A 285 THAT KEEPS SPITING OUT GAS AT THE VENT ON TOP OF THE CARBURETOR.I INSTALLED A NEW CARB, COIL,AND FUEL PUMP.RAN GOOD FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES THEN IT DID THE SAME AS MY OLD ONE???? ANY BODY ??

the fuel level is too high if this happens. perhaps the carb is using a plastic needle valve, which swells and sticks, a rebuild kit should have a stainless steel needle valve which won't stick. yeah, sometimes JD messes up trying to make more money!..

This tractor is getting along in the years. Perhaps you have a bad intake valve that is allowing high pressure combustion gases to feed back into the carb.

You should do a compression check to see if you have good compression on both cylinders. You also may want to check the valve to rocker gap.

thanks for the info.the old carb that i took off was steel needle valve, but should it have a rubber tip? or it would be metal on metal trying to seat.

the rubber tip could be either on the end of the needle valve, or in the carburetor, there isn't enough pressure for a metal to metal valve to work..
