JD3520 will not start

There are components (control module/relay combo) in many modern cars (and tractors) that need about 9 volts to energize, or you'll see exactly what you described.

what's happening is that when the key is turned on there's a clicking noise in the guage cluster and the idiot lights all flash off and on. that's all it does. the starter doesn't try to crank. nothing. just the noise in the dash and the idiot lights flash off and on. no error codes. nothing. fuses are all ok.

the rpm, mph, fuel guage would peg out to their max

The first thing, when I get a call with those symptoms, is make sure I have the proper battery in stock for the vehicle in question. (edit: a bad alternator will drain a battery and cause the same symptoms)

Tug, no reason to appologize! This site has a wealth of great information (often from you), and I enjoy reading it a great deal. I too am from the "old school" but don't have the extensive experience/knowledge to contribute very often, but I do try when I can.
My 3520 is also a 2006 model. I traded for it "used" in early 2007. The battery failed in the fall of 07 and the symptoms really confused me. My battery was showing 12 volts and the lights appeared to work normally. Two "automatic" type battery chargers both refused to charge it and indicated it was already fully charged. After checking everything else I could think of, In despiration I check the voltage while holding the key in the start position and noted that itwas dropping to about 10 volts. I pulled the battery and had it load tested, finding that it indeed had one dead cell.
