jd sabre tranny question

the tranny is on it's way out on my sabre. tuff torq k51. from what i've read on the internet i'm not the only one with this problem. the trans is just a piece of junk. when it finally goes out is there another trans that i can replace it with cheaply and easily? i'm looking to stick with a hydrostat.

Surplus Center had a bunch of different JD/Sabre transunits listed. Use the link from the main Discussions page (that way they know to keep advertising with TBN).

Most of the failures I have heard about were heat related. Unit gets dirty and can't get rid of enough heat.

My friend had a Craftsman style tractor like that back in 2002. Tranny went. Replacement was almost as much as the tractor. He searched for a used one online, in mower shops, and in junkyards. Nothing. Then I found him a JD 318 with plow and mower deck for $1500. He is still grinnin' ear-to-ear...

You may not need to replace the tranny. Is it making a loud screeching sound when you engage forwrad or back? Does it move slowly and then stop when you push forwrad on the throttle? It could be the tranmission spindle and or the pulley on top. Either way it's relatively simple and cheap to fix. You have to drop the transmission first and check the pulley to see if it is lose and if the teeth are worn. You can then go to your John Deere dealer or order online and get the pulley and fan assembly ( around $25). If the spindle needs to be replaced go to TuFF Torq .com and order the spindle for the K51 transmission model ( $25).

Removing the transmission invloves taking the wheels off and then disasembling the brake and throttle linkage ( not difficult at all.) Then you have 6 bolts and the tranny comes out. be sure and remove the belt before dropping the tranny.
