I picked up a parts LX 4 bushhog from a local dealer for $200. I figured the chain guards , the pto shaft and the slip clutch were worth that. It has a blown gear box. I found out why they didn't fix it. A new gear box is $750. It is in pretty good shape so it might make sense to fix it.

Does anyone know who made these? It looks a lot like a woods. Is there a generic gearbox that would work?

Can't remember exactly who, may have been Deere, not sure. Definitely not a Woods or a leading brand. Best to stay w/ the OEM/Deere gearbox.

I removed the gearbox from the bushhog. The sales guy said it is un-rebuildable but I have the parts diagram and the parts guy says he can get the parts. The rear bearing ground itself up and when I look into the gearbox it is full of metal chips.

Can I clean and reuse any of the bearings or do the metal chips mean that all of the bearings need to be replaced?

What is the best way/tool to pull the seals?
