I know all the safety stuff, but knowing it and doing it are different things. Had eye protection on. Gloves were sitting right there on the work bench.

Anyway, I'm thrilled to get this sorted out without a trip to the JD dealership. Thanks.

If you coat the bolt and the inside of the bushing with Never Seize or similar product before you put it together the parts will not rust together. The next removal will be a lot easier. If you don't have Never Seize then grease will work well too.

There is also this corollary:

If it doesn't work, force it. If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway.

I did get a 45 degree zerk in it so I should be able to keep it properly lubed from now on. And in all seriousness, I do keep everything on the tractor, this mower and all my other implements well lubed. I just gave up on that stupid tiny zerk and never lubed the tail wheel. What could go wrong? In John Deere's defense, that zerk may have been put in by a previous owner.
