I raised the mower and turned the depth control fully clockwise to lock it in the raised position. That worked OK but now i can't get it back down. Any ideas out there?

Is the problem that you can't turn the depth control knob? If so raise the deck to take pressure off the depth control. The deck will settle against the depth control adjustment screw making it difficult to turn the knob.
Thanks Jeff, Yes, not being able to turn the the depth control is the problem. Sounds like you hit it right on the head. I'll give it a try this week end.
