JD 810A

My less than 1 yo JD 810A appears to be using oil (maybe)???
Its the same as every other 810A with Kaw engine and 54" deck.

Checked the oil before cutting the yard this weekend, and the oil level was barely within the hashmarks. I am sure I put the correct amount of oil in it after my last oil change, and I checked it before cutting the time before. It does like to smoke when I first crank it, but I havent thought anything of it. Now I am a little worried.

Do I have a problem?

You might. I personally have had about 15 pieces of JD lawn and garden equipment with Kawasaki engines and none of them have used excessive amounts of oil.

Check to see if the valve cover gaskets are leaking and dripping down on the muffler. This will cause smoke until the muffler get hot and burns it off. If leaking tighten them up some and watch it for a while. Otherwise fill the oil to the correct level and watch it before starting each time.

I have not noticed any leaks at all; however. I am not standing looking at the engine to verify right now.

In my understanding, the Kawasaki engine is really good. If something was wrong, I would expect it quickly. The unit only has 18.2 hours on it right now(It only takes me about 1.1 hour to mow my 2.5-3 acre yard each time).

I appreciate any input.

My 17 HP Kawasaki water cooled is 10 years old now and still doesn't use any oil but it did have the valve cover leaking which I fixed by tightening the bolts. They are high quality machines IMO. It's easy to lift the hood to check out. Visual inspection is all thats needed.
