Excuse the "elephant in the room" question but -- have you tried jump starting it?

Even though you have cleaned battery terminals, I would not rule out a bad cable. Looking at your first picture, there appears to have been plenty of corrosion on the cable ends. Corrosion can get between the cable and where the terminal is crimped on even if you clean it thoroughly on the outside. I have seen this happen many times. If you have a volt meter, check to se how many volts you have at the large starter terminal when you attempt to crank. I think you will find a low reading. I would not like to see anything less than 10 volts while cranking with a fully charged battery. If it is less, you have one or both bad cables.

This is one of those things many MANY people overlook. I first ran into it about 20 years ago. The original battery cables looked perfect; no corrosion on the ends, no "tell-tale" bulges in the cables... nothing. Even though they were 17 years old at the time, we decided to reuse them. Well, long story short: After swapping out a new battery & rebuilt starter motor for known good used pieces, we installed new cables, & all was well.

If your cables are over 15 years old, & the corrosion has been kept to a minimum, IMHO your cables are on borrowed time. If it's over 10 years old & the corrosion has NOT been kept in check, well, I highly recommend changing both cables because if they haven't failed yet, they will soon!

Think about this also: High resistance in the battery cables will make the entire changing system work harder than it should, shortening it's life & adding expense well above & beyond the cost of new cables.

Okay ickymojoe, ya got some good advice, what did you do today? Have you checked the cables good enough? did you try another battery? or try to jump start it? or are you satisfied those things have been addressed? Have you got the starter out?

Everyone,

Thank you for your replies. Today, I am going to get another battery cable (negative and test it out. Also, I am wondering on the starter what two points must I cross to jump start the tractor (pictures)? I only see on bolt connection (#1 picture) and a quick connection point (below the bolt, green connection point to the black in the #2 picture).

I have also taken the battery to an AutoZone dealer and it tested fine there also. It was a little low on the charge but that is obvious due to my attempts to start the tractor.

Before you try and jumper the starter, you say you hear a snap noise? have someone listen at the starter when you try key, if the starter is making the noise, the solenoid is engaging the starter. I'd finish with replacing the cable before by-passing the ignition trigger circuit. If still no crank, you could try putting a screw driver across the bolt on connector to ground: however, I'd be getting that starter pulled and down to an electric repair shop for rebuilding. [replacing the cable is solid advice(dbdartman is right), in light of heavy corrosion at battery]

I've no idea about this tractor but I think you would be looking for the solenoid to bypass the ignition. THe solenoid would probably look like a small tube with two big contacts on the end and two small ones. You need to jump the two big ones together. If the starter spins up, you know theres a problem elsewhere.

Gentlemen:

My tractor lives again! What was the problem? It may have been a simple as a layer of dirt/dust on the second solenoid contact. I found it while debating on if I need to remove the starter. It is on the backside of the starter next to the engine block (very well hidden, you have to feel for it). I removed the dust boot, and rub the contact a lot. Tried to start and it turned over! I left it running.

Good things were address though:

-Battery Compartment corrosion arrested
-Replace negative ground cable (most likely needed it anyway with the large amount of corrosion)
-Cleaned the positive connection up (found some corrosion there)

Now to address the list my wife made for me while the tractor was down.....

Thank you for all of your help Gentlemen!

Sincerely,

Ikymojoe

Glad you got it fixed, sometimes its the simplest things that make things go wrong.

My, my, my, checked all connections except the one with the poor contact. Good for you, saving money by not spending it on unneeded parts...:D

Happy motoring....

BTW -

The "snap" is the fuel solonoid.

The "buzzing" is the fuel pump.

All normal - none of them are starter/sol related.

Glad you got it working.
