Tractor
New Holland TC21D
Hi Everyone, I'm new to the JD forum. I've been looking very hard at New Holland TC21d and TC25d, but I've also found a price on a barely used 96 JD 770 with 60" MMM , and a loader for $12,200. The tractor reminds me alot of the new JD 790 but is 24hp. Can anyone tell me anything about this tractor?? I'm interested in founding out about weight, size(width, and length), and also steering(power or not). Also does this seem like a good price?

Hi, I own a 670 but I did do some research (after the purchase!!).

(I'm assuming the 770 you're looking at is a 4WD model)
The 770 has 20 HP at the PTO.
It weighs ~2150 lbs (from the JD 670/770 Operators Manual). This weight doesn't include the FEL.
It uses a 3 cylnder Yanmar diesel engine, ~84 c.i.
Power steering is optional, so you'll have to check this yourself.
OAL w/ 3PH is 111.2"
Height with ROPS is 79"
Width with turf tires is 53.8"
Ground clearance is 10.4" (front, if 4WD), 13.4" (front, if 2WD)
Ground clearance is 12" at the rear

My 670 is built like a tank. Since the 770 is basically the same tractor, I am sure it will be a solid machine as well.

Before you buy, make sure it has the two stage clutch. With the two stage clutch, the movement of the tractor stops if you push the clutch ½ way down...but the rear PTO continues unless you push the clutch all the way down. I've a single stage clutch on the 670....wish I had the two stage. But if the tractor is nice, the lack of the two stage clutch wouldn't stop me from buying it.

My 670 is a 1990 model w/ 600 hours. I bought it with a FEL and Befco finishing mower in October 2001. I paid $8500 for the machine.

That should give you some comparison...check out http://www.machinefinder.com for more comparisons.

BTW, I see we're both Pennsylvania boys...I'm south central

Thanks Roy, You've been very helpful. Yes I live about in the center of the state. Susquehanna River Valley. The tractor maybe closer to you. Its in Richland, Pa. I found it thru the Lancaster Farmer. Also showed up on www.irondealer.com. I just found that search. I've been scouring the searchs and sale papers for months. I'm still looking hard at buying new. Thanks again Kent

With a $12000 price, a new 4100 would be real close..but the 770 has a bit more power. The 4100 specs out closer to the 670.

My first choice was a Kobuta BX2200... A place in Belair, MD had them for about $13000 including FEL and MMM (60", I think). I liked the BX for the lower COG (for my slopes) and the fact that it wouldn't intimidate my wife...she's OK with the 670 though. However, the deal on the 670 was too good to pass up.

Good luck in your search!!

Steelfan: I bought a 790 about a year ago (same machine as the 770 except engine size) 4wd, DSCV, loaded tires and delivered to my house for $12,000. I just bought a #70 FEL for $2,600. (everything new) I think the JD web site has the 2wd (w/o FEL) for $10,000. BTW, I love the 790, but some on this site only want hydro transmission (not available on the 790). John.

Hi John, I looked hard at the 790 also. I like the size of the tractor, and the fact that it has a 30hp engine. I'm glad you replied to this post. I've got questions about the transmission. Does the trans. work well for mowing lawn?? I'm wondering about finding the right gear. Also about the loader, and attachments. Does it have continuous live PTO? Does the lack of Hydro hurt you at all in most operations? I never had a tractor with Hydro will I regret not trying it?? Also Thanks Again Roy.
Thanks Kent

Steelfan: I like the size for rotary mowing, small enough to get around trees, large enough to handle a 5 ft. bush hog and box scrape. I have not used the 790 with a grooming mower, but I do drive over the lawn often for other chores. I have not had a problem damaging the grass, I do have R4 (industrial tires). You may want to go with turf tires. The trans. has 8 forward and 2 reverse gears, never had a problem finding the right speed. I almost always use 2nd or 3rd in low range. I just bought the FEL about a month ago, I only have a few hours on it and it is great. Even if you don't get the FEL at first, buy a tractor with 4wd and hydraulics (DCSV) already installed. I am not sure what you call it, but the 4wd 790 has a dual stage cllutch... pedal half way down disengages the drive gears and all the way down disengages the PTO. I to have never driven a tractor with hydro, so may not know what I am missing, but I do not regret the gear transmission. The only draw back with the 790 trans. is that you have to come to a complete stop to change gears (the trans. is not snyc.), but not a real problem for me. I use this tractor on 6 acres, it could cover a lot more land though. As you investigate the specs. you will find the 3pt capacity is 815 lbs. this is lower than other tractors, but I have never had a problem. I was interested in a proven design at a reasonable price. The 790 fit that need for me. Let me know if you need additional information. John.

Since I'm using a finishing mower with a gear transmission, I may be able to help...

This depends on your property's layout...how much back and forth under trees and such do you think you'd have to do?
Using mostly 2nd gear, I move around my lawn quite easily. However, as mentioned in an earlier post, the two stage clutch would be quite advantageous for turns. Otherwise, the gear tranny is quite nice. There is one area of my lot sloped ~ 20°-25°. I back down and drive up this slope (no turn-around area at the bottom of the slope). The only concern I have here is the potential for "popping" the clutch when shifting into a forward gear to come back up (rear roll over). I've learned to let my foot roll off the clutch (rather then lifting my foot off) by using my heel as the "hinge point".

Thanks for everything John & Roy. You've been very helpful. I just like the size, and setup of that tractor. My lawn is some trees, some flower beds, and some banks. I've also got a fair size creek with older trees to care for. My wife is big into flowers, and I do alot of gardening too. Still undecided about brand of tractor, but I like the NH TC21d, TC25D or JD790. I think I've ruled out the JD 4000 series. Upon talking to JD dealers I found you can not use a MMM with the turf tires on the 4200. That was the size tractor I was interested in. Thanks Again Kent
