JD 750 new battery short

Definitely sounds like a short, but another thing to check, are you sure battery is connected properly? Negative should go to ground and positive to the starter. WIth the key turned off, the wire should not spark or get hot. If it does I suspect the key switch is defective.

Has the "negative to ground and "positive" to starter been confirmed? Don't read where it has.

Bud did he install the battery wrong and then correct it? Some Diode or Semiconductor could have been damaged and is now shorted even though he corrected the battery polarity.

I would try abandoning the existing white wire and (assuming it is the same as an 850-1050) run two new wires.
1) White from the rear center terminal of the switch to the battery lug post on the starter
2) Fron the "A" terminal on the alternator (reusing the present connector) to the battery lug post on the starter.

If you have a multimeter, you could remove the switch and check for continuity from the switch center lug to the chassis of the switch. There should be none

I purchased a new keyswitch and replaced the hot wire going from starter to dash. I've been able to at least start the tractor and drive it. There is a second short with the regulator so i need to replace it. Thanks for the help.
