I had a 1983 or so JD 750
It was a positive ground system

JD 650/750's came from factory negative ground on battery. Parts key # CH15195 Cable POSITIVE

Not to argue, but the 750 that I bought new was positive ground from the factory.
Still runs that way today although I don't own it.

I'm not trying to argue either but there are very, very few positive ground alternators and I think the one on the 650/750 isn't one of them. MIA10312

Yes, I realize there are very few. I found out the hard way on this unit when I hooked up a battery charger as you normally would - negative to ground and blew the fuse in the battery charger.
I think the one I owned was a 1983 and I owned it till 2008. Three batteries later all with positive ground and it's still going strong the last I knew. It was a JD 750

They are all negative ground.

that's why you hook up chargers according to battery polarity, and ignore chassis polarity....

Except every charger I've ever used, including my Snap-On professional charger, tells one to connect the positive cable first to battery '+' and then the ground cable to a solid chassis ground, NOT to the battery '-' post due to chance of sparking hydrogen gasses from the battery.... :confused3::confused2:

Which is exceedingly bad advise for a professional tool manufacturer (or anyone else) to give when there are plenty of vintage tractors and cars out there with postive ground electrical systems.
It pays to be smarter than the tools you work with.

i have to agree with rick.. that's bad advice.

if you are worried about a spark at the battery... leave the charger OFF when making cable clamp connections.. THEN turn it on...

Are you stating it's bad advice to attach ground lead from charger or jumper cables to a non-painted surface other than the ground post on the battery if battery is still installed in vehicle???
