JD 650
Hello everyone, I've got a question for you. I've got a JD 650 with an under belly mower deck. I've been thinking about getting a 3 pt mower for it to make it a little easier when i want to use my other attachments. I would like to get as big a mower as possible to cut down on mowing time. What size 3 pt deck do you think my 650 would handle ? I'd like to go to a 72" but i'm not sure it would handle it ok. Any thoughts ?

I'm afraid 72" is out of the question for a 650. I think a 60" would tax the tractor pretty good. The 650 has 12-14 PTO horsepower at most? A 48" would probably be a good choice, although you could probably make a 60" deck work if you went slower.

IIRC, another thing to remember is that the 650 does not have a live PTO OR a 2 stage clutch so the mower will "drive" the tractor forward when you disengage the clutch unless you use an overrunning clutch on the mower.
What size is the current belly mower? I would not go bigger than that unless it doesn't lug easily with the current mower.
Dad had a 650 and a 60" belly mower on it but we never got to use it to see how it did w/ the deck. They were available with the 60" deck but that doesn't mean that it would work efficiently with it. I know with a 60" deck on my 2320 (18 PTO HP), I can pull down the engine in heavy grass.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've got a 60 inch under it now and would have liked to go bigger but no luck i guess. The 650 uses the 60 inch really well but i was concerned about a 72 inch 3 pt.

I use a Frontier/Woods 60" 3 pt behind my 650 and it works fine. It is the rear discharge Woods painted green for JD model. Cuts great and the 650 handles it fine. It is definitly as big as I would run on the 650.

A lot of us are getting to the age that we need to add that caveat...

Glen W: Question for you (changing subjects)...you have a 6' AF11 (Frontier I presume). Do you use if for snow removal, if so what type of conditions, how well does it perform? Do you have any helpful thoughts or considerations on its set-up, use or performance?

Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Yes it is a Frontier. It is not my primary means of snow removal but I have used it and it does work pretty good. It is a hydro turn and is very fast to use. The biggest issue I had was with the R4 tires. I have a lot of weight on the rear of the tractor. BB, Wheel Weights on loaded tires. I used to plow a good sized gravel driveway/parking lot that was also plowed by a pickup truck so it got a build up of snow/ice.Tires would spin real easy and the first pass had to be down hill. I would park it in the barn there which had concrete floors so I didn't want to run chains over the floors. Tire chains would have made all the difference though. Frontier used to sell these plows with long bolts to span the distance between the trip springs to make the blade rigid so you could use it as a dozer blade! Don't know how well that ever worked.I think that setup was just for pushing stone piles and like duty pushing. I also bought the plow with a rubber cutting edge on it but haven't used that.
